hawaii had a good summer, E swell galore and plenty of souths and early season NW's to be sure but on E coast, all of the best swells have been norse box munchers check this out: best day on east coast ever? (not including sandy in FL) http://www.surfline.com/surfnews/2005_10_18_njersey.cfm
You can thank this El Nino season for that. With that being said - Nor'Easters for me. Quality hurricane swells have been very inconsistent over the last 5+ years. Yes, warm waters and longer periods are a bonus, but it's frustrating waiting around for them. There can be times where we get nor'easters back to back weekly for a period of time - granted colder water - but during times when the sandbars have been naturally corrected and the crowds are virtually non-existent.
One of my favorite swells was from TS Danielle a few years ago-- OH+ at DP. Speaking of which, this summer has been a complete waste...I hope next week is not victory at sea...
