Hurricane VS Noreasters

It's interesting how different things work in the Pacific (more specifically in hawaii). Many hurricanes can be churning right down the road from us and not produce any surf.. (or rather, not send any surf in our direction)

Anyway, living in Hawaii I'm obviously going to say that I prefer cold fronts of winter time! Although the south Pacific has been exceptionally active this summer providing for a summer that was almost as good as any winter!

But on the east coast I preferred hurricane swells when they came, but since noreasters are a more common source of surf I would much rather be in winter time

hawaii had a good summer, E swell galore and plenty of souths

and early season NW's to be sure

but on E coast, all of the best swells have been norse box munchers

You can thank this El Nino season for that.

With that being said - Nor'Easters for me. Quality hurricane swells have been very inconsistent over the last 5+ years. Yes, warm waters and longer periods are a bonus, but it's frustrating waiting around for them. There can be times where we get nor'easters back to back weekly for a period of time - granted colder water - but during times when the sandbars have been naturally corrected and the crowds are virtually non-existent.

Actually I think the best swells I've ever surfed in NJ were from Tropical Storms.
When they are too big the swell period gets too long and the EC beach breaks are walled and closed out.
A nice 9-12 second period SE is perfect. Once the period gets beyond that it's close outs.

One of my favorite swells was from TS Danielle a few years ago-- OH+ at DP. Speaking of which, this summer has been a complete waste...I hope next week is not victory at sea...
