Do advertising prices go up for this site or news sites during a hurricane? or the entire hurricane season in general?
not sure. but as a web designer, who also uses google adsense, I would say no. They are paying him on flat rate reloads and imprints... So, he simply gets more ad credit since the usage of the site goes up. Micah can confirm that or further explain.... He is using adchoice which is similar to adsense... So most likely it doesnt change at all. Because both of those sources do not ask people to run ads for them... The web designers just sign up for it so they can get some coin.... Its not like the users get to control the ads... They just gear your ads to your site visitors, which is why you will see surfing, computers, boardies and anything surf related coming out of the ad database that has like millions of ads. Anyway, thats how it works on my site, which is pretty similar to Micah's setup here.
swellinfo is part of BNQT Media Group (see the footer of this page), who sell ads to big time sponsors as a flight rather than on a per click basis (i'd imagine). So to answer the original question, bnqt might charge more. not sure about how swellinfo gets compensated for that though
I havent put it back up publicly... the alpha/betas are running online... but it is sixoneninsurf . It is a san diego county online surf site... Im still dialing in the forecasting models, but my real time live reporting for the whole san diego coast has been literally perfect this past month as ive done testing.... Ive just been tweeking the artificial intelligence and trying to add 6,000 other factors to consider with each report.... I had the site running for about 5 years from 2002-2008 or so... Then I shut it down because i was sick of managing it.... But ive had a ton of time with the new baby, so when im not in the water, I am tweaking the live reporting system.... I have been testing the results every day im surfing and i have about 5-6 guys up in north county verifying my data.... I think most of the forecasting stuff out there is pretty legit, but surfline only gives you 2 updates per day on our reports... And swellinfo etc is usually not very accurate as far as actual report data for my area.... The equations and thinking that the swellinfo programming goes through works really well for the east coast, but its constantly misreading the data out here in real time... It reads a lot of shorter period windswell as actual wind, making the conditions usually look about poor-fair. And when i get to the beach, its almost sheet glass with like 4kt wind.... I can P.M. you a link with the alpha testing stuff, but right now, its spitting out the logical data into mostly text format... next week or so, I will have to program the graphical engines to spit out more visually appealing models and data.... anyway, im a swell dork. I know... but once you start programming your own artificial interlligence with regarsd to reading surf data, it turns you into a moster. Everytime you think you are done, you think of one more line of logic to add... one more what if... it is a never ending cycle... but right now, my sh** has been way more on point than surfline... just the details... the overall reporting for surfline has always been my favorite, but there is always room for improvement.... Maybe someday, i will go outside of San Diego County, but for now, its all local. That way I can locally verify data and know im right every day....
And as you can see from the west coast forums on here, there is a serious lack of san diego county users... So I will in no way interfere with Micah's advertising and usage over here.... At this point, I may even keep it password protected and private for the guys that i know and trust... but thats a bit much....
