Mandatory evac's issued, the ramps/park property/campgrounds are closed. Hopefully the swell peaking at low tide, then dropping off before high fills in will help the road out. I'll repost early Friday morning with more details via Avon/Buxton if we still have power and internet.

I just heard that Jim Cantore is now in Salvo so you should be in pretty good shape.

What are the odds the Bonner Bridge or S-turns has an extended closure from this? Sure hope not. Want to get back down there soon.

Only good thing about Cantore is that knee he threw to the college kid that ran up to him during that snowstorm.

kind of a non-sequitur but wha? http://www.obxlivesurf.com/ says the water temp is 57 F at the moment?? can upwelling really be causing this much cool water to move up?

Not sure about up in town right now, but its not totally uncommon for a 20 degree difference between Nags head and Buxton.

I always thought that was a little uncalled for response... but typical of a wierdo oddball geek like cantore.

hope everyone is safe and there is little damage to the area.

I stay for a cat 1. Personally, I feel we will see minimal damage and flooding from this one due to all the variables. Its moving through mighty quickly and we wont have multiple high tides during the NW backlash from the sound. That being said though the road is so vulnerable in certain spots that it doesnt take much for problems to arise. Park the car on high ground tonight and by morning we will see whats happened. If your not sure where high ground is Im sure if you ask someone where your staying they will help you out.

I'm trying to get down there Friday for the wind switch/die off. Hopefully the bridges aren't out or the roads washed out. Keep us posted blues. Thanks

Wouldn't worry too much. My parents are 70 and live in Avon... seen some storms...they are staying/ not thinking much will happen.

That might be difficult considering that with the mandatory evacuation order they stopped allowing access to Hatteras Island as of 5 am today: http://darecountyem.com/mandatory-evacuation-ordered-for-hatteras-island/ No telling when re-entry will be allowed. Depends on the status of Hwy 12 and the crumbling Bonner Bridge. After that it's prioritized: residents, non-resident owners, then everybody else. Just checked a few cams and all vehicles are heading north, none south, but otherwise looks like another day in paradise. Expected landfall Hatteras Village, back out to sea at Rodanthe. Be safe...

A stiff off shore wind will make you wish you brought the full suit.
