There is this guy who rides a little bitty roundish kayak thingy, its about 5 feet long and 2.5 feet wide and orange. He would sometimes get too close to the main peak, and he thought he was entitled to the set waves. He got into a long running beef with another guy who is a really good surfer and is pretty mellow. It was over stuff on land, as they are neighbors in the same complex. So for about a week during a good swell, there was stink eye and lip thrown back and forth, much to the amusement of the crew. Finally it came to a boil. The kayak dude got kinda close to T, and T told him to get the f@#k away, and he paddled over a bit closer. It was going off, a nice solid overhead groundswell with no wind, and seven waves per set, some well overhead. Between sets, T paddles over to the kayak thingy, and the kayak dude takes a swing at T, and T jumps off his board and flips the kayak, just as the first wave of a set comes rolling in. It picks up the kayak and dumps him into the impact zone, and he gets crushed with about six more waves, and pops up sputtering and the kayak is full of water and he can't get out and everyone is laughing at first, but now it starts to look serious and he may drown. I paddle in towards him and ask if he needs help and he says he is OK, then more waves come and he gets drilled again. Finally, T paddles over and pulls the guy and the kayak out past the break, and the guy gets out of the kayak, and flips it over and empties it out of water, gets back in and catches a wave in. T follows him to the beach and they talk for a few minutes, and they apologize to each other. We never saw the kayak dude within 200 yards of the main peaks from then on, and he was very, very polite to all the surfers whenever we saw him after that incident.
When I was out west I stopped by Steamer Lane and it was a full on Kayak and SUP contest. Dudes were killing it out there. I had a short board rental that I was going to take out but it was closed down to anybody not in the contest so I went down to Hook and got it good down there. I wouldn't wanna get run over by a kayak so while I was pissed I couldn't paddle out, I also didn't mind going somewhere else. The wave just looked so PERFECT, I had a hard time walking away...
