^^^^ I get what you guys are saying, progressing is obviously a good thing. But some people don't see surfing as a "sport" or something that they need to CONSTANTLY progress in.

Some people aren't in it for breakthrough moments. There just in it for other reasons. I personally enjoy turns, barrels, and just the flow. No desire to ever do an air. Iv been in this for the majority of my life only worrying about those 3 things. Never got bored or bitter. In fact my passion has only intensified. I do try to progress my turns and whatnot, but it's not something I'll get upset about of I can't do them. I won't start cursing for the whole lineup and I won't waste a whole session trying one thing just for the sake of progression.

Not saying your wrong, just that not everyone views surfing as a competition or as something that they need to reach a certain level to enjoy.

Progression in surfing is like any other sports or events. "Punctuated Equilibrium" a term borrowed from evolutionary science--meaning, usually you are at a plateau, then you go through periods where you make sudden advances in development.
Always trying to outshine others is at the very least, very lame. And LAME is an acronym for "Look At Me Everybody"....L.A.M.E. ....just surf....and do not forget to drop in on as many others as you can!!

    buh bye

wind outside is now blowing offshore at 40MPH. kinda sucks.

When I was a kid, lots of times I felt if I wasn't falling at some point, I wasn't pushing it hard enough. In order to progress, you have to push your comfort level and performance level. Now that I am (way) older, I still seek progression, and still fall due to pushing it past my abilities. Different equipment keeps things fresh, and now it is much more satisfying just being out in the ocean catching waves. Any size. I think longer rides are what really get me stoked, so those days when it is going off from way outside, and you can connect it all the way to the beach, doing carves, re-entrys, cutbacks, floaters, with an inside barrel, that is the epitome of surfing to me. That and dropping in on as many others as you can!!

Not everyone got into surfign for a "breakthrough" moment. Many of us do it for the feel of the glide and freedom to "walk" on water.

Well, if you are doing floaters, smacking the lips and stuff, wouldn't that allude to the fact that you are "good?" Spicoli can't do a cutback.

If you were Shreddah Number One you wouldn't make this post. You'd be with the Delaware punk, getting peeved over that last floater you did that wasn't up-to-par.

Since you are not "good," you feel obliged to make these statements aboot surfing for You.

You'll progress eventually, and realize that performance is everything, just ax CD or CJ Surf. He'll tell you.

Surfing isn't supposed to be "fun," it's aboot your area code and your last air.

As Sea Isle City's favorite son, CD or CJ Surf said.....

    Famed Delaware beachbreak?

    What, The Indian River Inlet?

Never heard of it. Jeez, that spot isn't even noticeable from Rt 1 or whatever that road is.

And Delaware punks? Outside of Wilmington? Get out....

I thought I was Sea Isle's favorite son?!?! (Sobbing, runs out of the room)
I dunno, I stopped progressing in 2009 and now I'm pretty satisfied with what I KNOW I can do on certain waves in certain conditions. I always admired and enjoyed power surfing and tube riding. I guess it's my generation. I love burying the rail and throwing spray both in the water and in the sack. I enjoy tube penetration. I have to stop looking at these 'Date Colombian Women" ads....

When I started surfing, I surfed for chicks. And it worked.

Now it makes them look the other way...

    Good point. Well made!!
But, she already knows I am deranged, so all the surfing I do has little meaning. But for some unknown reason, the lady still loves me.

this is a funny thread. There was this kid I surfed with a lot when we were groms (before air reverse era). We all wanted to throw the "biggest spray"...sort of a fun competition during our sessions. He would hit the lip and immediately look over the back of the wave to see if "we saw"...most times the wave would pass him by and we would heckle him.

the look at me guys will always be out there hoping someone observed their ______! One of the coolest feelings is when you are surfing alone and you pull off something special and there is no one around...that feeling is great...you the surf and your stoke!

Someone mentioned their passion has only intensified...to me that is a break through moment...progression. It's all about stoke (as cliché as it may be)!

I personally am not going to progress beyond where I was 10-15 years ago (mentally and physically) but I can still progress presently. For instance, when in good waves, I try to focus on having more pocket presence.

To the OP...if someone is passionate enough to progress and they are struggling, they may get angry....human nature for some of us. I never really tried to "stick" one move but surf the wave (as rad said) b/c every wave/session is different. But, when I skated half pipe and tried to "stick" maneuver, and struggled...I would get pissed and yes curse at times. I was skating for me though.

i feel like being a surfer in NJ means you have to make the most of limited waves. If i try to do airs most of the time i am not going to land them. My mindset is totally different than it woudl be if we werent wave starved. So, i surf with the intention of getting speed and going for manuevers that dont end up wasting a good wave. Its a shame because it makes me suck at surfing "progressively."

Yeah, I don't surf for anyone but myself either. Thats why try to find a spot to be by myself. But I won't deny that it feels good when I'm a better surfer of a bunch. And when there are better surfers out there than me, I step up my surfing without even realizing it. I can't be alone in that.

Its like an animal instinct or something.
