I never realized how much of a joke Virginia Beach is compared to DE, MD, NJ, and NY until I joined this site and started seeing all of the the photos that are posted from other areas.
I lived up in NYC for around 8 years after college and took the train out to Rockaway a few times... but a 45 minute to hour ride on a NYC subway with my board was too much of a pain in the ass. I knew the waves were better up there but I had no idea that there was such a huge difference.
If you live anywhere outside of VB just realize how lucky you are.

I'd rather be in VB than landlocked in Iowa or somewhere lame like that.

There's always somewhere better and somewhere worse. I agree that at least you're not landlocked. Although I think Iowa has snowboarding, so it could be worse. :D

VB surfer's claim to fame is the proximity to the Outer Banks... On any given day that I have surfed on the Outer Banks, it seemed that most of the guys out were from VB.

At least VA Beach has Mount Thrashmore, I mean is that still there? Otherwise, oh yea, the Banks.

Short end of the stick when it comes to swell window. A large portion of surfable days for us up here are south windswells, which are non-existant in VB.

I'm sure VB gets good on Nor'easters, but then again, so does the whole EC.

Slamming VB if you don't live here is like using the "N" word if you're white.

For all the complaining I do about it I still like it better than a lot of places I could be stuck. You always hit the ones you love the most the hardest. At least that's what I'm learning in therapy.

Oddly, you could walk from North End to Sand Bridge on the backs of the surfers in the water on any given day and never get wet!

agree. VB can have its moments on those big noreasters and stoms. i myself know it sucks here but i bet a lot of people here can agree that obx is one of the best surf spots (if not the best which is what i think) on the east coast. and lucky for us, we are only 1:45 to 2 hours away from Rodanthe/s-turns like some other guy said. so anybody that hates on vb that doesnt live here should really back off some.

You know your surf sucks when your only claim to fame is that you can blow up somebody else's spots that are way better down the road. Besides I dont think its the waves that make VB suck.

A bunch of guys just told the guy who made this thread to stop hating on a place that he doesn't live, but I just read this post, and the guy who wrote the thread has his location listed as "Virginia Beach"... So, it sounds like he does live there.

I am from the OC MD area, but I have always liked VB when I went down there. The surf wast much, but it was always crap in MD the times I went too, so it was really no different. But, there are MANY more pros to Vb than people are saying. They have an year round economy. They are the largest metro area without a sports team. They have affordable housing, and yes they are 2 hours from OBX...

I mean, being a couple hours from somewhere really doesn't amount to a great day-today way of life to me, but if you really utilize OBX and go down there a bunch I guess that would be really cool.

But being 2 hours from OBX is also like living in Raleigh, right? If the only times you get waves are driving 2 hours away, you might as well not live too close to the beach anyway...

And living by the sea has more to do with things other than surfing. VB is sitll an ocean, with fishing and water sports and time spent in the ocean...

VB is not bad to me... But Im a guy who never lived there. I havent met too many guys from VB on here that can't wait to tell me how great it is.... dunno.
