jsut never like them. Part if it was starting in the late 70s when logs were verbotten. Ive had several but just never got into that ride they give.
Barry coming in hot!! Im proud of you, and I like your advice. I am definitely going to start asking/telling SUPers to call out sets. I almost always watch them outside- if they are scrambling, you know waves are coming.
So who made you king of what folks should ride? Many do but some folks like riding longboards and hanging toes. Not everyone wants to be A # 1 shredda riding a Lost, CI or whatever that generic modern Pringles Potato chip shortboard is in your avatar.
Fixed that for ya. Actually that's one of my own boards.....built by yours truly. Would you fee less insecure if I changed my avatar to one of the longboards I've shaped?
Wow you really got that mass produced So Cal rippa grom board look down, YAWN! See there is my opinion on the modern, stark white, no soul, looks like it was mass produced in China crap the kids surf today. But that is my opinion and while I would never surf that thing I would never tell you not to. Not insecure at all, in fact I don't even ride a log, mainly ride retro fishes and single fin eggs. I just think your broad comment on what others should ride is asinine. Not saying SUPs should not learn some etiquette or respect but when asshats decide they are the authority on what should be ridden in what type of surf that's when I decided to chime in. Shape and ride what ever you want but don't disparage others from riding what they want. And remember there was a time when the short board was seen as the "problem" in the lineup.
I Have no problem with SUP,log,kayak...whatever. What I do hate is when I make a point of getting into a spot away from a crowd and some butthead paddles out and sits right on top. I ALWAYS ask "what are you doing?". Sometimes they cool out and move and sometimes they are ****s. If they stay...I make sure to block whatever they go for.
With all the disdain from surfers have with Sup'rs (me included), I always wonder how much sh*t Laird Hamilton gets from his surf pals. He's the one who pretty much brought the whole epidemic to life right? Instead of a Thanks Obama thread, should be Thanks Laird
I'd argue that a well-intentioned but clueless dude on a SUP is way less of a concern than some aggro teenager acting like he's on the world tour. It doesn't matter what car you drive, it's who's behind the wheel.
Hipster, ha that's funny. I'm bout the farthest thing from a hipster on the planet. If you saw me you'd surely call me a prep or boring business man type. As for surfing are you saying you can't get barreled on single fins or fishes? Not sure if you have ever surfed in NC but 95% of what we have here are mushy waves with not a chance for a barrel. I do have a round tail 6'0" with thinner rails and more modern dimensions for the few hurricane swells we get but most of the time the waves around here don't really support rail to rail surfing. I am 41 and have been surfing since 15. At my age surfing to me is about flow and trim. My favorite part of surfing is the feeling of gliding over a wave, hearing the whir of the water under the board. If you are into vertical, aerial or whatever kind of wave sliding that gets you off then enjoy that and I'll enjoy the way I ride waves. Your comment is the perfect example of what is wrong with surfing today. It's not the craft you ride it's the attitude of the person on that craft. I'd bet no matter what you are riding you're a ****, where as Seldom could be riding a Boogie, SUP, Log, Fish, SB, Egg, Step Up or a lunch tray and he'd still be a nice guy. Bottom line is respect the people in the lineup regardless of the craft you ride.
There's a vast difference between surfung with someone who's experienced and someone with an undue sense of entitlement.
The aggro kid probably isnt catching waves 50 feet outside of the lineup coming at you out of control on an 11 foot 30 pound hunk of molded epoxy.
I never said I was a great surfer. Things I am not getting paid for I do for pure fun. Seems like you and SadBrad both have that I'm still gonna be a pro and make it at surfing mentality. Surf for fun, surf for yourself, other wise you're just a tool trying to impress someone else. And I'd rather flow and trim like an old man than hop around like a retarded bunny trying to ride a "modern" board in waist high wind swell. But hey you keep having fun and trying to impress folks with your surfing. When you get older and realize that you are not special and you are just another surfer in the water maybe you will do it for the pure fun of it.
yes its for fun but some of us always strive to be the best we can be. You talk about the hopping like a bunny. this is a standard cop out for those unable to ride a shorty. if the log is your thing, cool, have at it. a mellow flowing log ride is a thing of beauty that few can pull off.
It's not a craft problem. It's a people problem on both ends. Too many people are using SUPS to enter surfing. I'm an avid SUP surfer and rarely have problems with anyone anymore except for a few ignorant people. It's simply about respecting others space and being kind and remember you all are just out there to have fun. My concern has become that too many people are using SUPs as a way to learn to surf. This is not the way to do it. If you are going to try SUP surfing on any peak that you are not the only one out on you better have learned how to catch a wave laying down first and understand how to control a basic surf board. Once you are comfortable on a surfboard then try the SUP. Experiencing surfing for the first time on a SUP is like trying to drive a tractor trailer for your first time ever driving. SUP surfers who are skilled need to patrol other SUP surfers. If you see a person acting dangerous on a SUP politely go over and explain to the person that they need to move to a safer area until they are more comfortable on the board.
