Since I'm on a roll about my Christmas gifts, I thought I'd mention that I received the book, "Assholes, a Theory". To my surprise surfers are mentioned in the first chapter. The author uses surfers to give a clear explanation of an asshole. To be fair, he distinguishes between "asshole surfers" and reasonable good guy surfers. The assholes are defined as the guys who feel they have a right to drop in on waves or get in the way of people who have caught a good wave just because they're local or think they surf better than anyone else. If anyone calls them out on their bad behavior, they are willing to fight over it. The author also says that no matter where you surf in the world, you will always find an "asshole surfer".

Nice to know I'm in good company:) Happy New Year!

So if I'm the only one out does that makes me the "asshole surfer"?

This sounds like an interesting book. Might have to get a copy.

If I see a lone surfer out, and she's fighting amongst herselves between sets, I now know why. She is fulfilling the natural requirement for there to always be one a-hole.

Hey, how old do I have to get before I can start getting to drop in on people / get extra priority, etc? Is it like KFC, when they give me senior discount at 55+? "Hey, that's Paulie, that old guy. He gets a 2 second head start. See, he has the blue wheelchair logo sticker on his board."

Just playin. Don't want or need a head start. Book sounds intriguing.

    :)
