Ok so we're getting into semantics...could I have rephrased that, sure. A more correct statement would've been that there are more Muslims in Indo that anywhere else, since it has the highest total number of Muslims, to which I'm sure I still would've gotten some smarta** remark. Bottom line, lots of Muslims in Indo. Regardless nothing about my statement did not make sense. Glad you been there though, your trip clearly allowed you to have a firm grasp on the demographics of the region.

no, it still doesn't bloody make sense! if indo were the country w/ the world's highest population & a significant % of the population were muslim, then maybe. as it is, 88.1% of the nation is islamic. for the math impaired, that means 11.9% of the population is something else, be it christian, hindu, buddhist, whatever. yes, that 88% takes its islam very seriously, but that does not mean that you can't move around the country safely. it just means that you need to not be a dumbass & watch your surroundings.
there are a lot of muslims in the maldives, too...more, percentage-wise, than indo (98.4%), yet somehow, i managed to do a trip there a couple years back & came back w/out being beheaded on cnn. i also wouldn't hesitate to travel to morocco (99.9%) right now, either.
in short: would it be a risk? sure. but it's a damn sight better than sitting at home on the couch moaning about how dangerous the world is!

Sorry, still makes sense. There are more muslims in Indo than anywhere else. Never said I was sitting on the couch moaning about the dangers of the world either. Actually, I'm rarely on the computer from home. And my couch time as of late has been spent reflecting on how great it is to live in New England this time of year. I was simply adding my opinion to the OP, which if you recall, was directly related to what he was asking. Somehow you took my original comment personally and got all pi**y. Go to Indo brah, go to Morocco, for all I care, stay there, more power to ya. Just don't try and tell me I don't make sense when I do. We all have different opionions of what constitutes a good time, and if I were fortunate enough to have some travel money and time, I'd probly stay in the Western Hemispere.

Grow a big beard, wear ratty old clothes, and purchase a Canadian hockey team t shirt to wear if your surfing with the muslim brotherhood. Alternatively, you can explore waves in places not so many people think about for surf, like Ireland. They aren't cutting too many peoples heads off over there. The Pints are simply delicious, and the country is in dire need of tourism and they'd be happy to have you. Plus fall is simply the best over there. Ever walk into a strange bar on a surf trip and have the majority of the people in it interested to talk to you and have a few laughs? Yeah, me neither. You might get your head cut off in a muslim dominated country, and you might just GET head in Ireland. And score point break lefts that just go and go and go. The line-ups are super friendly too. And never too crowded.

yeah I went in 2004 and parts were scary then. No way I'd fly into a country that is hosting anti-american demonstrations. That has got to be the definition of "asking for trouble." You might not make it out of the airport. Some VERY aggressive demonstrations are happening near the airport in Jakarta. Bali might still be cool but who knows, peaceful muslems and insurgents look the same... and again it's the cab driver or the kids on the corner that will get you long before the bearded guy in a turban. If you insist on going keep a low profile and only trust ex-pats. Your mission should to get straight to the surf camp or charter boat. No "drifting" in these times...

For the nica question... they are probably the safest country in central america. And very catholic.

Brah, you should be in some learn to read program. Read the f**king article, the facts are there are more Muslims in Indo than anywhere else in the world, regardless of what percentage of the population they make up, just give it up already.

Don't believe the hype...Bali is chill...majority hindu... Aussies are everywhere...everyone speaks English... some of the nicest people in the world... Still have friends there...I feel safer walking around there at night than my own hometown of Portsmouth VA (VBers will get that reference)...elsewhere? IDK I wouldn't go to Jakarta but I wouldn't go to Jakarta anyway...

    For sale: 6'0 x 18" x 2 1/8"

Looking to get rid of this custom made board. Great condition. Pro box fin system (fits FCS fins). Works great in waves waist high and bigger, board is in great shape, has pressure dings but nothing major. Asking for $215 but willing to negotiate. Located in Salisbury, MD. Email if interested. Those pictures are from 2009, I surfed the board for about a year and a half.

My good friend just spent July and August traveling/surfing Indo... he didn't speak of any worries. I will have to ask him again.
