Well, my free time and good swell have not been in sync, so I have not had a lot of opportunities to go surfing lately. So one afternoon last week I decided to hop on the skateboard and 5 minutes into it I slipped and my feet were not set when I landed. I ended up rolling both my ankles. Resulted in a high ankle sprain on one foot, an avulsion fracture on the other.

The fracture has me in a cast for 4 weeks, and probably out of the water for 2 months. First real injury I've had since I was 17 (same injury playing basketball).

Anybody suffered anything that took you out of the water for an extended period of time? I just know I'm going to be **** once I start surfing again. Which will be right on time for the tropical swell season. Oh well.

Probably the last time I'll hop on a skateboard again as I can't afford to have these kind of injuries anymore in my life.

avulsion means you chipped or broke a bone into another part of your body.

kinda sucks because you will die. good news is you live for 2 months. bad news is the end is painfull.

    Sorry to hear that.

Could have been worse. 2 months is no time! Pfffft.

It sucks being injured. A few years ago I tore my achilles tendon which required surgery. That kept me out of the water for 4 months. The first 6 weeks were the worst because I could not put any weight at all on my left foot. I had to use crutches or a knee scooter every time I had to go somewhere. There is nothing in my story to cheer you up but just know that all of us sooner or later have to deal with injuries, many which are much worse than what you are going through.

Broke my fibula and ankle doing gainers off rocks at sunset cliffs. This was prior to me picking up surfing so it wasn't that bad, but it still sucked. 4-6 months before I felt normal again. Ive broken both my ankles and sprained them multiple times from skating as a kid. You'll be alright dude. The body is pretty resilient. Take your vitamins, eat healthy, re-hab when you're ready and watch lots of surf footy. You'll be back in no time. An ankle brace on the foot might help a while when you're back.

Also, throwing tomahawk will help keep one sane.

    Seldom's right McLovin.
When Life gives you lemons Make lemonade.
I suffered an upper ankle sprain from a deep tube foam ball attack that left me out of the water for 3 months.
In that time I took up bird watching. That took me to places I never went to before saw many cool things and learned alot.
I also bought rollers for my bike and began a workout routine that got me into the best shape of my life up until that point.
When I got the ok from the ortho, I went on a 3 month surf trip and pushed myself into stuff I'd never would of thought of.
Reach for the stars brudda. Don't let it get you down.
Turn that track up a few decibles!

A bad knee has kept me from running and out of the water for weeks now. I'm able to make it to the gym though. No leg stuff, but still manage some good upper bod workouts. The knee is slowly getting better. I can at least get up and down the stairs now without too much trouble.

Broke an ankle and later tore my groin pretty badly rollerblading. Had rollerbladed for years. Enjoyed ice skating too. The groin tear happened when when I was 51, skating with my daughter and took a long time to heal (takes longer as you get older). Hung up the skates after that and started surfing several years later.

You guys (morons) should all stay off of boards if it has wheels on it.
I haven't been on one since I was 13 (1964), a Makaha with blue wheels.
You old farts cannot tolerate falling anymore; stick to lifting mugs of beer.

worde. skateboards become highly dangerous implements when you get older. I went skating with my son last year, just cruising along the wall, then couldn't walk the next day, nor for the next week, as I stirred up a bad case of plantar fasciitis that affected me for the next 6 months, was able to surf though.

Last time I was on a half pipe I blew my knee out and needed surgery. I was 25... holy sh!t 27 years ago! I will still long skateboard occasionally, but I stopped bombing hills after surviving a case of high speed wobbles on a third of a mile hill on my 48th birthday. Alcohol was involved.

I don't know barry, they keep raising the temptation level w/ mo' stuff:

But I agree w/barry, once you reach a certain age, falling w/velocity on anything but into water or soft snow is usually bad. I stick to simple pumps and carves on my carver, but even then with a great deal of care.

@mclovin: sorry to learn of your injury..hang in there man, and heal up good. You'll find something positive to occupy the time.

McLovin, it's tough to be sidelined. Husband took this photo of a poster on a wall at JFK. I thought it was pretty cool

DUDE! E town is my sh*t!

Iv never been really seriously injured. Never broke a bone except some fingers and toes. Got lots of stiches though on multiple occasions that kept me out of the water. Never for that long though. Month tops

I found going down and taking pictures helped me stay sane. Watching the water, finding the spot to sit, looking for the good ones and snapping pictures. Made me feel like i was still keeping up with what the breaks were doing.

I strained -- not even tore -- my achilles a few months ago playing basketball, and man does it take forever to heal. It'll feel fine 99.9% of the time and then one little tweak is agony. I jumped off my board once and landed on that foot, and could barely walk through the whitewater. I can't imagine tearing it. I can't stand Kobe but tip o' the cap to him (and you Iggy) for going through hell and trying to come back.
