Hey everyone. So I have been following this forum for a while and decided to join. I am from Massachusetts(ok stop the booing and hissing) and am a fairly new surfer. 47 years old and started about 2 years ago. I ride a 7 x23 1/2x 3 1/2 Joe Blair Big Guy short board (at least thats what he calls it at 7 feet). Surfing has been my midlife crisis but if it is, then I am glad to have it! Surfing to me is like eating chinese food, an hour later I feel like doing it again! When Im not surfing, Im watching videos, reading articles, and training so that I can be better at it. I try to absorb anything I can as far as tips go. I can pop up easily on anything from 2 ft to 4 ft with this board but I have yet to try anything bigger than that. I can trim front side and back side, but have not been able to link turns together. Or turn quicker.. I am assuming my lack of skill and also the size of the board width wise is holding me back some. 6 ft tall and 215 so still trying to figure it all out. I surf Hampton, The Wall, and Jenness depending on what I see for conditions. I also have surfed Long Beach gloucester, nahant, kings, a nice little "hidden" spot in swampscott that hardly anyone knows about. I plan on hitting further North and some spots in Rhode Island soon as well as some spots in Nantucket. This past February I surfed in Aruba believe it or not..... I surf all year long and if there is decent surf, I will go at first light before work, or until the sun goes down after work. I really would like to go to a surf camp in Costa Rica or someplace like that for a few days just so I could have some video taken so I can see what I need to work on and how to better my surfing. To me that would be the ultimate trip for vacation...The only thing that keeps me out of the water is the lack of surf. Good thing I live in New England and not California or I maybe selling pencils on a street corner and a homeless surfer.... Obessed? maybe,... happy? Definately!
I think you are thinking of FUN, not 2FUN but maybe it would still count as a deja vu... But I think FUN was/is a youngsta. Anyway Olde 2FUN Guy... Welcomme. Keep your stoke! I was Olde, once too... Now I'm ancient...
Nah, there was a guy a while back called "Toofun" or something, he posted a pic of himself and everything because his kids called him fat. He's also a NE guy, same age range. Anybody else recall this?
I do remember a "too fun". Bailed a while back, but I think he was younger than what this guy claims to be. Maybe it's, too fun Sr. Anyway, Welcome Too Fun seniore, your biggest obstacle will be Mary Lee...or Sarah Lee.
^^^ Link to this post Newbie to this forum...just want to say HEY! OK so I am gonna apologize in advance for this thread as it may be a bit long winded.... Starting surfing last year in New England at the young old age of 46 (lol) My son who is 15 picked it up and was hooked right from the start. He has progressed nicely as for me well not so much in the beginning. I have always been very competitive and driven and love being in the water BUT I am 6 ft 230 with about 20lb of "extra" weight on me. Started out on foamies which worked ok as well as the water logged rentals, white wash riding, trying to get up and stand before I hit the sand. Started in July of 2014 and took my lumps on learning going out a total of 24 times before calling it quits for the season in NOV... BTW Stood up and rode a wave about 4 times out of all of those times but would just keep coming back for more!! Winter came and I spent it skiing as I always do watching youtube help videos, making an indo board from and a goof board both from the blueprints they have for them registered online with the us patent website(yea amazed at that but i guess as long as your not selling it your covered).... worked on pop ups on a pillow and rolled towels with my sons actual surf board and even got myself a big guy board (all in at this point) So after waiting out the winter season I got back out there this spring in march and although my popups were better, I STILL was wiping out, washing out, and getting pummelled. BUT now in mid July I have been finally getting to my feet quickly, and riding waves on the face and consistently getting my front side and heel side turns!
I bought a board by a guy out in Solena beach cali by the name of Joe Blair who makes big guy surfboards. Mine is the Big Guy Quad and was made as a 7 10 x 25 x 3 3/4 It is a single to double concave bottom and he moves the quad fins up about 3 inches. It rides great, paddles easy and turns decent. I can catch 1-2 ft as well as 4-5 ft(not often in ne but some storms in the fall) My only gripe is that I WISH it was not so egg shaped and also a litte more responsive. Im thinking of going to a different board or at least adding to my quiver but am stuck on what to get? Options are the 7'4" Monsta Chief in 23 x3 1/4 or a Chronic Bully? Or maybe even the VEC BEEFCAKE or something he would shape for me. Anyways, anyone have any suggestions? what do you think? Thanks in advance!! Mark TOOFUN
LOL Actually that was all from memory. I typed in toofun into the search engine and went back to page 2 and there it was, less than 30 seconds to find
He actually posted for a while and then disapeared. I'm sure we'll get the I lost my username / password or got a new computer story any minute now. He might be related to Emass, IDK
