Cali is way better I'm jealous I'm from OC Nj. MakeitStop moss landing is one sketchy spot. . .only place in Califronia I ever actually seen some very large aquatic creatures with me in the surf. In 2008 I surfed there and two weeks later a surfer was killed by a 16 foot sharknado.

What's the surf scene like in San Fran? Crowded lineups? Gnarly locals? San Fran seems to have some pretty solid surf... Def interested in that area

I'd say go to Cali and once you start surfing more, you'll find the good spots.

it's actually friendly and encouraging...mostly because the water is so cold and the surf is so big (summer is particularly foggy and overcast there, too). San Fran is among the most expensive cities in the US, so that cuts down on the crowd

Cali is mystical, and for all those who haven't experienced (atleast surfers) it is a must....trust me and all the other surfers who have re-located. I live and love my home on the banx but I surfed more in one year in North San Diego than 3 years on the banx! Cold hard truth. Well warm really. I trunked it with a top while the thin skins out there wore full-suits! Enjoy the Ride

First don't call it "san fran" or "frisco" the locals get all up tight about that.......but the locals are really chill around here and pretty hospitable. (not including some spots just outside of Santa cruz). The surf is solid and there are rideable waves almost everyday, but usually get blown out by afternoon. October and November are pure heaven. Ocean beach is no joke and the currents and rips are legendary, really easy to get in over your head there. Rent is steep, but jobs are pretty plentiful at the moment.

Granted I have low standards when it comes to waves (just like to surf) but...two weeks in big sur and Nor Cal late this summer....surfed nearly every day in the waist-ish range and even a few HH-ish days. Even the days I didn't ride... coulda made an effort to beat the onshores or ride a LB but felt spoiled. Point being East coast summer=flat to 2 ft range. Norcal summer=2+ and better. Once you talk about fall, winter, and spring...east coast just can't hang.

What the hell has got into the forum waters this week?!?! Everyone is making love to their arch rival. First RC & Chuckie unite the clans, now this. SI is starting to feel like that ESPN commercial where the boyfriend-girlfriend in respective ND-OSU garb start making out on the couch and they say something to the tune of "what would our life be like without sports?" Which is basically Doug's wet dream.

Good thing we have 8-10' gale wind chop in most of New England plus Montauk today. Not kidding. Perfect vitals for giving surf lessons in.
