I am going to Vieques with my family in December. I have heard mixed things, some say there is surf some say there isnt. Looking at a map, it looks like its blocked by the main island of Puerto Rico but does seem to have a good amount of exposure on the north side of the island.

I know its not gonna have the amount of surf that the rest of puerto rico has, that said any advice or tips are appreciated.

Never been there, but a good friend that's from the main island says it is real fickle. Good diving spot though. Either way you should have a good time

    re Vieques

Vieques does have surf. best in winter time, several spots on north and north east coast. not as big as puerto rico usually. there are a few local surfers there now, dont remember their names. do take your board if possible. Ocean is beautiful for diving and snorkeling and has one of the best Floresenent? bays in the world. enjoy....

    Surf in Vieques is alive

VQS gets wind-built or storm swells on the north and east beaches, but according to local riders, it's not going to be Rincon. Playa Voltios - the surf / skate shop in Isabela Secunda knows the scene well. And lucky you ... they have a a few rentals (6'6, 8'9s and a 9'0) plus lots everything else you need. We're two Maine surfers on VQS in mid-April, 2013 and the surf is small, but the beaches, food, and vibe are great.

The place is very hazardous. The US Navy used the site for training from the 1940's , using live ordnance. then, in 01, we left and forgot to clean up. Lots of chemicals and unexploded bombs.
Plus it's got the highest murder rate, per capita, in the world.

yeah only because they have a population of 10,000 and there was 17 murders.. Mexican cartels line up and shoot that many in little town in mexico in one day.

i was reading an article that said culebra was super laid back and eccentric, and vieques was mellow and functioned on "island time". both destinations were praised and the phrase "island vibe" was thrown around pretty loosely. is there any truth to that, because based on what i am hearing it sounds like viequez and culebra tourism department made a donation to the folks who wrote the article.

I can' speak for Vieques but Culebra was pretty laid back. North exposed coast so if there was a swell can't see why there wouldn't be waves although there was no swell that week which is why I went to visit. As far as sketchiness I didn't pick up on any vibe of the sort; I hiked the island, slept on a hammock, and had no worries. Like I said though, can't speak for Vieques...
