You guys are crazy, or I am a vagina. I would be in a 5 or 6 mil in the mid 40s. I get through the whole winter down here with a 4 mil and 2 mil booties and it bottoms out at like 53-54 degrees. I see guys with gloves and hoods and stuff. Same as CA though. Guys paddle out in January in hoods and 5 mils when the water is 56. Im like WTF man?

nah, i usually climb into my 5/4 when it gets down to the mid-low 40s, but i've pushed the 4/3 to 39 or 40 on occasion, but only when i'm just sick & tired of dealing w/ the 5/4 & the air is warm.

Zach - I'm convinced that wetsuit technology in the past few years has really advanced. I've got a 4/3 xcel drylock (w buil t in hood) that is about a year old that I swear is warmer than several of the 5/4 wetsuits I've had in the past, and is sure as hell a lot lighter . Fit is HUGE. If it doesn't flush anywhere, ever, you can be happy in a 4/3 way down into the 40s. They are pumping a lot more air into the newest neoprene which makes the suits a lot lighter, but also more insulating. Trapped air is far more insulating than rubber.

    They are crazy.
Their just trying to sound "tough". How that makes someone "tough" is beyond me. Has it not become blatantly clear that most of this forum is just one big "d" measuring contest? And you're thought less of if you bodyboard(stand up and be a man...lmao) or if you actually like to not freeze to death.

All the while their miserable in the water I'm comfy as can be :)
I'd be wearing a hood as well in 56 degree water. I see all kinds of people in 6mm winter suits in Rhody in late fall and spring. This swellinfo exists in it's own world. Hell, all wetsuits are designed FOR california, not northeast which is way colder.

It just keeps getting more and more ridiculous on this forum as the years go on. Remember a few years ago people were still rocking 6mm. Then it became 5mm. Now it's 4/3 in new england in February with no hood if it's sunny. lmao. What a joke. And as far as wetsuits getting better, thickness is still thickness. Fit is more important than "advancements"(marketing stuff they use to sell you stuff).

Emass, I hope it's not lost on you that MichaelJR is on pace to match your 3000 posts in his freshman year?

What is it about Massachusetts that breeds such prolific internet wordsmiths? Is there really that little to do?

I mean you no offense by the comparison. I'm pretty sure you already surfed when you joined... (starting in February no less), and I'm pretty sure you're not a fanatic gun-nut who harbors apocalyptic delusions (or surfing delusions for that matter).

Oh look: mr sensitivity positivity has graced our doorstep with his opinionated ignana once again. With any luck there will be an 'oops' with the Venetian blinds auto-eroticism evening he's got planned.

Bro. Inferiority complex much? Be easy buggah. You claim to be so puzzled by the highly charged debates coming at you yet you fail to realize you put a hat on each day that says "Who wants a piece...bishes!!!"

There's clearly a continuum here of wetty usage ranging from hot-blooded, anti-neoprene freaks like me that choose to trunk it at times in 58-61 degree water, to the majority of by the book temp chart wearers, to resting hypothermics like you and MVsurfer. It's a Bell Curve bro.

Is what you find so outrageous is the fact that there are those who not only don't share your mindset but quite the opposite?

Yet your post count grows like a Monsanto mutant crop...

Bro, he's at 22.14 posts per day. No one without a tumor on their adrenal gland can sustain that output for long. I thought MIS would eclipse my output upon his spirited arrival but even he simmered down. Hey, so did I. My post output ebbs and flows and my word count certainly has ebbed.

It's not that we have little to do in Mass. It's the simple fact we are raised to read books, write words on paper (or electronic tablet these days), and engage in verbal discourse that is supported by an intermediate-level lexicon at minimum. Trust me bro, it's hard being of an endangered species in that regard. You ever been to a foreign country with zero English speaking denizens? That's what the world feels to us.

If, in my later years, I at some point lose track of the finer details of my existence I will defer to you for clarification bro. Thank you. Yes, I first laid prone on a surfboard in February and joined this sideshow 2.5 months later. Wasn't exactly a roaring head start. I do have my Class A LTC/CCW but I've got a surf/wetty/skate quiver in lieu of an armory.

You were the one that attacked! Because he dared to wear a wetsuit in 60 degree water!!! The nerve of him!
Dude, we get it....you're the "no rubbah kook" who's trunking it when the water temp is 50 degrees, but it's 65 air temp outside ;)

Best I can say here in VB is that I stopped wearing a hood and gloves last week. Still in a 4/3 and boots.

Ran along the Dam Neck beach this afternoon for an hour or so. Nothing close to ride-able. Watched the SEALS conducting training ops in their black helos and boats offshore. Pretty cool.
May just go out tomorrow AM for a paddle before work.

Bro. Ask zach if he felt attacked in any way. Ask him. He knows what time it is and that I respect him and look up to him quite a bit for his experience as well as good nature and realistic views on the world. What's also good about zach is that simply questioning or disagreeing with him does not automatically elicit him detonating nukes - you gotta get that cat's blood really boiling for him to raise his volume.

Ahhh...I'll just quit falling into the trap of your posts and feeding the beast at all. Can you please put me on ignore just like you did yankee? Will save us both a lot of time. You can relieve yourself of dealing with me and peddle your wares elsewhere.

Dude you attacked the sponge guy, not zach. You launched your nukes talking about him fronting about being core and you wouldn't wear a wetsuit out in california blah blah....Don't twist it.
How could I ignore you. You fill up half the threads with your terminator willed constant posting. I'd be lost

I was responding to the dialogue in this tread not the 3 others that you're cross-sectioning to justify w/e you think it is that is my major malfunction. zach said a few posts previous that he might be a woman for his temp sensitivity and I threw him a friendly jab because he knows it's harmless coming from me and the fact that he had the disclaimer of self-deprecation.

As for constant posting, let's have some awareness of the self there. At least my posts only get a 62% annoyance/disapproval rate by the SI crowd compared to your 99.8% tally. It would be 100% because spongers other than seldom seen and Micah don't count but those two do.

Dude. Put me on ignore. Now.

Haha. Oh boy where do I start.

I went to private school my entire life, thus, the extensive vocabulary and impeccable grammatical skills that you seem to be ragging on emass and I for. Our education system in MA carries the rest of the country against global stats. Not trying to sound pompous, but the personal attack brings it out, so I'll take the low road this time around. Being eloquent is a MA thing. I suppose long winters and solid education system encourages literary prowess.
But I digress, My sincerest apologies. I'll try and lighten it up.

I have 30 some odd posts I believe. Hope I didn't bust the flux capacitor. Next time I have questions I'll consider your wise post, and keep them to myself. Certainly a way to keep things productive. Very conducive to a positive, ever growing environment and community.

As for apocalyptic delusions and my affinity to firearms, Freud once said something about people with reservations toward weapons. I suggest you take a stab at it. Might be an enlightening experience, introspection can be a life changing experience.

You set yourself up for this for the record. Bad mouthing me, not knowing a single thing about me other than my general curiosity and new guy questions. I apologize for taking up your precious time, I'm sure you were doing something groundbreaking. I've been nothing but respectful up until this point. You must be one of those hardcore practitioners of this localism thing I keep reading about. Newsflash: it's the internet, a wealth of compiled knowledge available at your fingertips....when utilized correctly, one can absorb a great deal of knowledge in an astoundingly short period of time. By your comments, I should be seeking such knowledge in a lab, utilizing diffusion through a semi permeable membrane, so as not to disrupt the equilibrium of the interwebs you inhabit.

Give me a few before your next proverbial tongue lashing, I have more questions about wetsuits, and I need to get off of my soft top...I'm not a legit surfer until I ride a real board. It's like the guy that shows up to track night with a fully build 454 with a Holley blower hanging out the hood....that he had built in a garage for him because he can't spin a wrench.

That's the thing...I don't care what I'm riding. I don't think that is what this sport is about. This is exactly why I wanted to get into it. Fun. Just out here to have fun. I wakeboard June - august, and I've been snowboarding since I was a kid. I'll pick up on this quick, there are no delusions of surfing. I simply didn't want to jump into New England 46 degree water without having a clue as to what I'm doing. Logic dictates reason. Pretty basic stuff.

I won't block you though. I'm dying to hear your eloquent retort to this little diatribe.
