its ON! Day 3 of the Pismo Beach Open pres. by Dignity Health http://www.worldsurfleague.com/events/2018/mqs/2810/pismo-beach-open
I attempted to surf there when there was a bit of swell and it was just closing out... not lining up at all, really. Seems like a one turn wave. Why not Sandspit or someplace better nearby?
Sandspit has access problems but the north side of Morro Rock would be a good spot, plenty of parking, etc...
Mine was just up the road at the Avila Beach Pier. Fall 1977. Waves were almost as high as the pier, and I had no business being out there. I was young, stupid and egged on by a college friend...some friend. Not fun. Those were the "pre-leash" days. I had nightmares for years. Gave my board to my brother, took up SCUBA diving, and and didn't touch a surfboard again until 2012.
Pismo and Shell beach 1979. I believe I may have posted this sometime back. I recognize some of the people in the vid from my college daze at Cal Poly.
In the water. It was well overhead, disorganized, choppy and I was surfing a groveler that was like duck diving a door. I was one of three people out for obvious reasons, and once I finally got outside (after like 20 minutes of fighting whitewater) one of my first takeoffs was a closeout ledge jump. My arms were shot at that point so I just called it a day. Pretty humbling experience and shows some days it's better to just sit on the beach. Did surf Sandspit shortly after and had some of the longest, cleanest rights of my life. Night and day difference!
makes kelly's wave pool look like nothing! Literally getting shacked out of the frame all the way to the pier. unreal...
