Crowds will only be a factor at your premier breaks on the east coast. Close-outs will be the biggest problem... The men get seperated from the boys real quick in big surf on the EC. Most of the weekend warriors and seasonal residents arent equipped with mini-guns, they'll figure out real quick that dropping into a 10ft bomb is not going to work on their fish.
I'm not a weekend warrior/seasonal... I'm just broke, but I'm highly considering buying a step-up Craigslist style if the forecast remains the same.
This thread is useless without pics, damnit!!! Honestly, for some strange reason that was the hottest post I've ever read in this forum. Guys... relax. The swell isn't even there yet. Exhale. Wow. Oh, and for doh+ if you are on anything less than a 6'8 to 7'0 mini-gun, you might have some trouble catching the wave. Just some advice from the Pacific side of things. Take it for what it is. I'm 5'11 X 195. My step up is a 6'4 MC Bonzer 5 fin. Then for when the shiznit hits the fan I have the 7-oh CI MSG with the Occy fins. That's for when it's bigger than 10 foot faces. Guys, you need it just to catch the wave. Just because you see the pro's on a 6'2 on a 10 face does not mean that it's just as easy for you. Be smart, surf safe, and use good judgment. If you think you might not be able to handle it, don't paddle out. Best rule of thumb when deciding: "If I lose my board out there, would I be able to make it back in alive". If you say "yes", then paddle out, if "no", then take some great pics. No need to get in peoples way or even dying just to say that you paddled out. It's not worth it. You can one day build up to the point of being able to paddle out into that, but you need to have the confidence and the know how when dealing with a life or death situation. You don't want to realize that you were in over your head when it fades to black. Surf smart. And stop freaking out, everybody. It's just some good surf.
March 11 2004 was 12-15 ft. SH was the only place working. I got there 5 am and there was 30+ people already in the water
Good luck catching 12 footers with a 6'1", and if you do catch it it will be difficult making the bottom turn without sliding down the face sideways. With waves that big you need something bigger to catch the wave something that will hold better. If your main concern is riding something that you can duck dive and you are worried about the paddle out, then you should not be out in DOH. Sorry guys but mofosurfer is right, it's not worth it... and don't be that guy who paddles out and then sits out there for 3 hours and doesn't catch any... And let's not talk about SH... let's keep that hush hush or there might be 60 guys in the water by 4:30.
Thanks for the tip boys, I'm grabbing my 8'0" foam top (that way it doesn't hurt anyone when I ditch my board on the paddle out) and jumping on the ferry. I'll see you at SH Sunday.
you'll see a lot of that move where guys sit way the hell too far outside and do that sort of half-commited paddle for the sets, every now and then a bomb will steam through and clean up, look for a lot of snapped leashes and buckled funshapes and humbled egos
I'll be the one sittin' WAY OUTSIDE, pickin' off the bombs on my 9'6" Hynson pintail.... READY LADIES???? bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaaha
I just talked to a life guard on the beach in OCMD and he said that if its really pumping (DOH) then they are going to make an excpetion and have every beach be surfing beach!!! He said that its not definite, but if they do make an exception then the beach will be open all day and there will be life guards and beach patrol looking out for the surfers. dont know if its gonna happen but it would be sweet if it did by the way if im 5'1 and 98 pounds do y'all think my 6'4 quad will cut it? (and shut up i know im small LOL) its got really good float (although pretty much anything does for me)
Looks like its gonna be just like the waves I rode in Nosara this past April... gonna be sick. Charge it!
