Hey, Basically going down to Jaco the first week in March. I've been a few times but at different times of the year. What can we expect as far as surf size in Jaco and Hermosa in early March? What about conditions? What tide is best for these breaks? I've been there when it's low tide and it's flat but at high it's decent. Is this always the case? Any help would be awesome. Thanks
If it's not happening in Hermosa, you got some prime breaks nearby. Esterios Este y Oeste, Guacalillio, Dominical, Playa El Rey, and, the best of all, Boca Barranca. the last time I was there, I caught boca with 1 guy out, head high and off shore. Longass left. took for ever to walk back.
Not bad but looking for more of a first hand account. I've been to all these breaks several times and it's always different.

surf at higher tide. should be waist to chest-ish every day. early mornings should be offshore, late morning wind will come onshore. not to say onshore in the sense that it will ruin it, certainly surfable, but clean and green in the early morning hours. i would surf in hermosa over jaco if you have the option, would also stay in hermosa as opposed to jaco. pura vida

Early mornings are best. the line up is usually empty and the sun isn't as intense. Tulin was the spot for high tide surf. Last time there you couldn't access the river mouth.
I got a place at the north end of Jaco and have been traveling there for over 8 years. Jaco at low tide sucks...it just dumps on the beach. If there is any size (3 to 5 ft) Jaco will break good for about 2 1/2 hours on the incoming high tide and outgoing tide. There are sand bars all along Jaco with it breaking more gentle down to the south end. Since your heading in March, your a few weeks short of the Southern Hemi season for big swells that come off of New Zeland and Australia but never the less your in Central America and there is always waves...always. If its small in Jaco just head to Hermosa...could be flat in Jaco and Hermosa will still be waist to chest. Hermosa breaks good all the time excpet dead high tide because there is so much water pushing in and the beach is steep at the north end. Tulins is better because the beach is more flat and this is good at low tide...but that's way out. Esterellios is just like Jaco...better on the mid to high tides. CHICHARRONE got it right...good advice. Boca by far the longest and easiest wave but it needs a BIG SOUTH SWELL. You probably won't see one this early in the season. Hermosa will be your most consistent wave. Good rule of thumb...if Hermosa is HUGE...head north to Boca Barranca. If you need any advice on car rental or anythhing else let me know!
