Looking for some advice on the best surboard cage/rack to get for my 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Would prefer one that does not require new holes to be drilled. Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with the new jeeps as much as the old. But with the old: racks have always been a problem. Especially if you have a soft top. They make racks that work with the soft top but they are all sortof hideous and none of them are really designed for surfers, they are all off-road luggage oriented. Not to mention they kill gas millage. The best bet has always been drilling racks into a hard top. And drilling into the hard top really isn't that difficult you just have to make sure to measure 10 times, and drill once. I used to have a set of drilled racks in my 2000TJ, and eventually decided i didn't want them anymore after 4-5 years. When i took them out i just put a dab of black 3m5200 over the holes and i have never had a leak. I just throw the boards inside now.
I use tie downs around the roll bar on my '05 Unlimited to make an interior rack. Works really well. I can rack 2 shortboards above my head and they don't get in the way.
I have an 08 and use a congo rack. Its the best for just surfboards, considering the price. Found mine on Craigslist for 200, it flips back for putting soft top down, but I recommend getting a bikini top, as it can be put on and taken off fairly easily without worrying about the rack. I think you can get them new for 300 or 350, but then you also need to buy the crossbars. If you go on the JK forums, they usually love the gobi racks, but they love the gobi racks, and they are very nice, but very expensive (1400ish?). If I didn't find that one on craigslist, i probably would have gotten the gobi; they are sick. There are also a ton of options for hardtops if you use it all the time.
Thanks, is that picture of the Gobi? I have heard of Body Armor and SRC, but I think they both require a new bumper to connect it to the frame. I ran into someone in Montauk that said got her's from a place in NJ and learned about it on a forum, but should could not remember the name. She got it new for $350 (4-dr) and it looked pretty sturdy. Thanks again.
hard or soft top? if hard, go hit quadratec. if soft, just unzip a corner of the back window and slide the boards in.
Its a picture of congo rack. you don't need a new bumper, and requires no drilling. sturdy as you'd ever want it to be. There are a bunch of rack companies; warrior makes one (but you need to drill into the body), MRBP makes one, but you need a hardtop, and there are some more. Check out project-jk.com's forum and search racks. You'll find what you want. Like someone else said, you can always open the back and slide them in. If you have a 4 door, one thing you may not realize is the back head rests fold down if you fold your seat forward, then hold the rest down and fold it back. makes a flatter surface to lay the boards on. Also, 9' board is about the maximum size you can fit inside the jeep, in case you ever wanted to secure it. even then you have to manipulate your seats a bit to make it work.
As long as you have no passengers in the back seat, you can fit all kinds of boards in through the back soft top window. I managed to haul my 8'8", 7'6" and a 6'3" back from Nags head in my wife's TJ with plenty of room for other stuff in the back seat. If you were close to Va beach I'd offer to build you a custom one to fit your needs and tie into the stock bumper. I'll be building one for my wife's TJ this comming spring anyways.
Its a 2 dr soft and I already slide them into the passenger seat ( 7'6" and 9'6") when I am solo, but for some strange reason, female passengers dont always like to ride in the back seat. I tell them they are getthing the limo treatment, but they rarely buy it.
well, you could try to slide them in behind the drivers seat but angle them out the back toward that passenger side. the 9 6 might stick out pretty far though. If you don't want to do that then I think you need to look at safari type cage racks. i think you might be able to find one that bolts to the rear taillight mounts and the window hinge but its been a long time since I shopped them. quadratec has a great chat feature so they should be able to get your something.
