Did anyone else see the massive jellyfish in the water this morning? I haven't seen jellyfish like that this early, but I surfed Long Branch this morning and they were everywhere. Could it actually be from the oil spill??? It was like it was August the way I had to duck dive around them.... thoughts anyone? Not used to seeing jellyfish when the water is still this cold.

I saw them 2 days ago....Big and they were orange

on a side note: I noticed beads of water on top of the water...like when oil and water don't mix.....anyone else notice that?

I haven't seen any but I doubt its from the Gulf disaster.

The only thing I can think of is the Gulf.... Not really sure why the jelly's would be here so early. They are some big SOB's too!

Your not kidding. There are a bunch of jellyfish out there. The water is nice, but not warm enough for these bastards. Since the water was nice today, I didn't need gloves, but those little ****s got me on the hands a few times and once on the neck. I don't know if the trade off of no gloves was worth it, lol.

Nah they aren't here from what happened in the gulf. They are here from the unusual subtropical coastal low thats lurking.

That makes alot more sense then my "Gulf Theory," I'm going to stick with sales and stop trying to figure stuff out. Good form Aguaholic! I definitely got a couple stings on my neck and you had to be real careful you didn't get a face full of jelly when duck diving....

When did this start? I was out on Sunday (don't laugh) and I didn't notice one single jelly.

i didnt see any in northern monmouth county ive been in the water a lot this week.

regarding jellies and cold water, i was in alaska for a vacation and saw this one bay that was packed with jellies the size of small cars, glowing purple/bright blue amongst ice chunks, i would not want to meet up with one of those bad boys

Went out in Jersey today and there were millions of jellyfish everywhere... It was nuts... What is going on???? By the way caught some pretty sizeable waves this morning at about 9 o clock the conditions were pretty perfect and they ended up being bigger than I thought they would be. :D

is this what they looked like (more or less)? if so, they're called sea nettles & their sting hurts like a mother! last time i saw some of these in the water in jersey was back in 2006, after tropical storm ernesto. i was in the water at rambler rd. in wildwood crest when one wrapped itself around my wrist. i screamed like a little girl! i actually have a scar on my wrist from it to this day.:eek:

they stuck around thru the fall, tho they dispersed quite a bit from the initial concentrations...got nailed on the heel by one again while getting out of the water in barnegat.

my understanding is that they mostly live in bays & estuaries, particularly the chesepeake, where the water is really warm. i've never seen one more than a couple inches in diameter, but that was plenty big enough!!

That always happens. It just surface tension. You've prolly just noticed though because of all the oil stuff that's going on, but I've seen water do that before the spill happened, so no worries... yet

Yeah the sea nettles dont have the long tentacle tails though from what i can see... Its just their heads and the little white crap underneath there head... So idk if they can give a serious sting
