No, it's an old one. Called a layback.

ya got me tinkin. maybe it Is a layback.
but the arm on a layback is a pivot.
    he's ruddering.
which i guess could be a layback where (the rest of us) wouldn't normally see one.

I know he does drag his hand in a way that other guys try to copy but never seen anyone properly do it. I dont think there is a name...

Laird Hamilton did this at Teaupoo years ago. He even talks about dragging the right hand backside in a movie (forget which one).

Does Laird every ride anything where he's required to do a pop-up?

    nope.
i would refer to this as a basic hand/stall.

it seems jjf is ruddering with his right arm.

There are so many funny definitions for ruddering. My favorite is double dutch ruddering. Supposedly its the closest thing to going gay but not actually being gay.

Hand stall, ruddering, who cares what it's called. Things don't have names when your acting in the moment, I assume thats what JJF was trying to do, not innovate. The more you guys think about surfing and name the less you get it.

This forum is a bunch of people dutch ruddering eachother.

Let's just say you still hold your own paddle, but another fellow provides the motion in the ocean.
