haha. hell yeah. that's when MEN were pro surfers. imagine Martin Potter or Archy traveling with his mom? LOL. those guys would get drunk and coked up the night before, and surf heats the next day with alcohol fumes coming out of them. sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
i agree with you, geographically. But that said, Mexico has WAY better coastline and has the 10th highest purchasing power in the world and the 14th largest economy..... But none of that matters. they are third world countries. At least mainland mexico has clean water. Then entire brazilian coast, especially outside of major cities has 500 times the legal feces level in the water. Just saying. The place is a beautiful dump.... And poor people don't buy surfboard. PERIOD. That is all that I am saying. And you think the wealthy folks living in Rio give two sh**s about surfing? Especially when anyone with money and inteligence wont even get into their own oceanic cesspool. agree with your points, but it doesn't translate into a good retail market. Same with Mexico. I mean, Costa Rica has some of the most popular surf on earth. Their entire market is on surf tourism.... There aren't any notable guys on tour from these wave rich areas. Poor people don't buy surf gear and accessories. Surfing is like golf. Its a first world activity. People in Brazil will gladly sell you a knock off leash that will break the first time you use it, just like they do in mexico... So if that is what you mean by a surf market, then yeah.... But if you think poor people in the slums are going to gather around a jumbo tron to watch pro surfing, I would say now way
u answered it right there. surfing contests.its not about how good u are,how well u can adapt in the conditions.its really strategy and sportsmanship.when andy irons came back on tour,he lost every heat, does that make him a kook?does that mean Gabriel medina and travis logie are better than him.no!!! I watched the final at chopes between the 2.yea id say gabs sucks in regards to teahupoo, but u couldn't of played a better heat.gabs suckered Kelly into every shytty wave so he lost priority.slater said this shyt in his book he wrote like 15yrs ago. u can be a total kook and be world champion.when most heats finish with both surfers having 2 low scores.i watched enough contests to know how to make it past round 3.its really a science, priority is everything.when someone like gabs has priority, and u start paddling for the wave and gabs knows he got priority so he starts paddling, and u pull back.now gabs just lost his priority and next wave is your pick.u control the wave selection by suckering others into the crappy waves.thats why slater lost Tahiti,if he would've held priority he would've got 10s on all of medinas waves that he didn't go all out on.
Yes and he got the boot, the filthy overflow from the non-composting toilet was the final straw for the health department and neighbors mite be the same guy that ran into tax trouble for his 'surf shop' by foodland and then one day the whole place was burned down and his tax problems disappeared. what. a coincidence.
all of the perceived negative attitudes about "buying surfboards" lack of "wealthy rio people caring" all is totally mitigated by having a young, good looking world champion for a country to hang their hat on. you can't tell me brazzo fans don't already show up in droves at contests off their continent. if they had a champion of their own they finally have identity. medina is so crucial to zosea's ultimate success with the tour and their rise in brazil. ps are we the only board talking about this zosea/brazil/medina? i haven't seen much/if any talk of it any where else and i post/creep a lot of boards.
Contests are free. It doesn't matter if they show up to the venue. That does not equate to $ for Zosea. Medina has been better than everyone this year. Deal with it
miguel pupo has style. and charges. i like pupo alot
no not at all. if you're Zosea and you're going after sponsors for contest do you want to say we had 500 people at the event or 50,000. it doesn't matter Zosea doesn't charge admission, that's moot. the point is the more bodies you have at the beach the more sponsors want to come and the more you can charge them. Zosea is being run by former NFL/NBA marketing and sales guys. these guys are the best. exhibit A is the recently announced new NBA tv deal worth 24 BILLION over 9 years. that is what Zosea looks at and goes "why not us?". maybe not 24 billion but WCT events are back on ABC and now big wave hellman is on ESPN 2 (coincidentally ABC/ESPN share common ownership)
Agreed. Brazzos roll heavy everywhere. But there is a reason for that. They are the smart Brazzos that DONT live in Brazil anymore. Brazil is like Mexico in that way. Everyone from there is so prideful, but then I ask them: Well, if its so beautiful and so peaceful and so great, why did you flee? Brazilians are ALL OVER CA, HI, OZ.... There are tons of good Brazzos surfers worldwide, but the smart ones all Flee the country so they don't have to live in filth and squalor. So "Most" of the brazilian surf community does NOT live in Brazil. In summation: So as long as you continue to market to the 3 powerhouses: CA, HI and OZ, then you will reach the majority of the Brazilian surf community. I just don't see how appeasing a hand ful of Brazilian fans, who are already life long fans just cause the Brazzos are out there. Giving them a world title really doesn't fit anyone bests interest. At least the way I see it.... If you want to get all "conspiracy theory" on it, I think it might behoove the entire Tour to let someone, ANYONE with brown skin win a title. I think HI, CA and OZ surfers have spent decades invading foreign surf. It would be nice for the WORLD of surfing to have someone of a darker shade actually win a title. And a Polynesian doesn't count. But why can't it be someone from Costa? Or Chile? Or Peru? Just. Not. Brazil.
He sometimes suffers a minor case of the stinkbug in his top turns, but generally, I like his style the best out of the Brazzos. He can go from a little stagnant to just throwing some insane moves. That is a great wave in that clip. But an even better "Kiss the sky and thank Jesus Claim as he spit out".... Ohhhh Brazzies, thats why we all love you so.
Dude, I would be doin the same thing if I got spit out of a pipeline drainer like that too! That wave was claim worthy. I can understand the complaints if the wave is sub par or not epic but who cares if you claim a good wave?
it's just funny, given the current topic of Brazzos. Nothing wrong with claiming every now and again. Not everyone goes that route though.
act like you've been there, ya know? and don't get me wrong, there are times to claim i suppose. but there's a difference between showmanship (kelly chugging a beer in the tube) and being irritating
I dunno maybe I'm just a really stoked person. If I get a good barrel most of the time I'll do a little claim to myself, not like a look at me thing or whatever. I just love surfing
Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with being stoked. But professionals, who get paid to do this need not make a sign of the cross after every barrel, look up to the sky and kiss to the heavens and end it with a fist bump. It goes in any pro spot. You don't see Rory Mclroy doing the sign of the cross every time he sinks a put.... You don't see Lebron celebrating and jumping up and down every time he dunks it.... You reserve the claiming for special occasions. Like when Tiger sinks a 30 foot put, after the second day of sudden death 18 hole golf at the US Open at Torrey in 2009. When you have just put on the best show in golf history and won it in a clutch fashion... Then you claim. Then you fist bump...... You don't act that way cause you chipped it in off the green on a Thursday. Or when the buzzer sounds and Lebron officially won his first championship. He fell to the floor and held his arms to the sky. "Claiming"... Thats when you claim. Ohh well, we could go on and on about this, as we do every time a new contest happens. Don't make no difference to me... Claiming every wave is like when you see someone's professional video edit and after most of their best moves are landed, they instantly look towards the camera to make sure they were rolling. I HATE THAT. Especially when they don't edit it out. Its like bro, you know you are in a film session, don't look right at the camera as soon as you land a trick... It cheapens the entire thing. Just paddle back out and do it again.... Less is more people. Act like this is what you do for a living and act like this was not your first barrel. I have had plenty of moments where the giddiness it almost unbearable and I am laughing out loud on the paddle back out, adrenaline dripping from my pores.... But damn, unless I just got a tripple barrel on the best set wave at blacks on a huge day, I am not hoping over the back with my arms up to the sky cheering... Guess its just a style thing
warning: controversial statement ahead. I was not a fan of anything AI did other than surf. his whole schtick was ridiculous.
Kind of off comparing apples and oranges. Your comparing celebrating victory to a claim. Watch Tiger or Lebron when they hit a big shot mid game. There will definitely be a fist pump at the very least. Which is the same as a claim in surfing. Lebron running down the court with his arm in the air after a big shot - claim Jordan posing with his arm up after a big shot- claim Any NFL player celebrating after a sack - claim. It's all the same sh!t, but it's frowned upon in surfing
