Rest peacefully, Joe. Had the opportunity to meet him a few times. He lived for all-things-surfing. Really good guy. Camera was like an appendage for him - it was almost part of his DNA. http://www.easternsurf.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=1816:rip-joe-mcgovern&Itemid=111
Saw this this morning. Never met him but enjoyed all of his photos and he clearly did so much for the RI surf community. RIP.
Very shocked and saddened to hear about this yesterday afternoon... RI lost a great, respectful, and talented gentleman. Always was very happy to share his shots from contests. Every time we pulled up to a local contest, he was always there to greet us. Thoughts and prayers go out him and his family. Rest in peace.
Warrior. One of my favorite people in the lineup. His deep bellowing voice calling me and others into waves and his laughter and smile as he spoke were Energy on the levels of Immeasurable. We shared an affinity for the way inside corner of Point Judith. A true gentlemans wave. An Honor to every moment spent. Om

Hate to speculate, but I would think he possibly broke his neck. I don't know many other surfing "injuries" that would kill you that quick.
Was thinking the same. Header into the sandbar. Pure speculation, though. Either way, he's gone and he will be missed. Good to go out doing what you love, if you have to go out.
