$free, a guy at work had picked it up at a garage sale years ago and then fixed some dings. Single fin...

I'm pretty dedicated to sponging but I will def give this thing a try:

(What kind of board is this anyway? is this a "funboard"? It's slightly taller than I am, I'm 6'2"...
Nope, not a funboard by any means. Looks like an older, maybe 80s model single fins. Kind of similar to the Gerry Lopez style boards that were being used in Hawaii. It's probably around a 6'6. little tapered wings towards the tail. Here is a brand new, cleaner look at basically the same shape... Have fun on it. Most of us probably learned on completely random hand-me downs. I know I did. Once you get comfortable riding on that, you can step into a more modern realm, or if you love the thing, keep it old school.
nice board! make sure if you can move the fin around to move it all the way back towards the tail for the greatest stability and ease of learning. it should do you real proud and should be fast as hell once you get used to it. happy learning!
Wow! That's an awesome board! Score! Judging by the height of your doorways I would say its around 6' 6-10"
Few little cracks in the finish, I think maybe they are just in the paint layer and not through the fiberglass, maybe I should try to fix them up before I put it in the water though. I tried searching SI for "crack repair" but all I got was like 500 threads about "Roy smokes crack" "njshredmachine smokes crack" etc.
i was thinking about suggesting that perhaps you try something more modern but then i remembered that i learned on a 9/6 backyard shaped hack-job so i didn't.
Yeah from bodyboarding I already have wave-sense and timing etc so I can jump right into the "falling on my face a zillion times trying to figure out how to balance during a pop-up" stage of learning ...
Here's images of a couple of the worst cracks.. it seems like from reading various things it's basically like, do a real fiberglass repair (which is kind of a pain / multiple steps) or do something silly like just cover it with clear tape or superglue:
