I am not a fan of Firewire surfboards. I don't like the way they ride and they all seem to bog. However I am a fan of "progress" and I must say they have done some very interesting and innovative things both in terms of construction and design.
The "bogging" is my impression as well. But to each his own. Boards are like a pair of shoes, fit is king.
BBP and B/cuda - if you get a chance, try the aadvance by firewire. i feel its bog-free as well as nimble. and i aint no paid shill for f/w......show me something - anything - better and those thai pop-outs would quickly become a fond memory.
You know, board selection is a "fitted" decision. There is a lot more, as I can see you know, than brand, style, what is cool, etc. I just got rid of my 2 shortest boards. Age plays a part. Having said that, I am considering a Roberts Hope Diamond, 7"2". Has the volume to keep me in a "shorter" board for my age range for next couple of years. Might be a good travel board as well. ButI know nothing about Roberts--am going strictly on volume and shape. Should be fun...
I still ride my Dominator. Not quit as springy as it once was, but shoot, I've had it since 2009. Traveled with it, dropped it, surfed all kinds of waves on it (waist high to Dunes in PR). Yeah, it felt a bit corky at first due to the EPS maybe, but it has taking a licking. Slave labor works, apparently.
Y'all = Those who are convinced that Kelly buying a company means the boards are SICKKKKKKK!!!! It's that type of mindset that holds people back from truly progressing.. you know the types. The waves are pretty good, wind is kind of on it, but the kook next to you keeps "talking to you"... but he's really just talking at you and making excuses for himself and to himself... you know... "I wish I had my 6'9" Wingbuzzer and the winds were 5 kts less.." "Darn, these waves aren't even breaking" And Doug, I'm not saying that is you. But if it is, I'll give you the advice I give every kook that pretends they are trying. Put your chest way more forward on your board and pearl until you draw it back just enough not to. Put your head down paddle and if anything go over the falls but do not waste a wave "going for it" when really you are afraid of falling. Get over that fear and I promise you, you will pop and catch 95% of the waves you "want". I can see it in most kooks hearts.. they like the idea of surfing beautiful big perfect waves.. but they don't want to go through the pain, the rain, and the ****ty days that it takes to get there. Now I'm going back to the water where I belong. "YOU ALL" awoke a sleeping monster.
It is about the surfer and not the board.. When you realize that, you will probably go to your local guy and drop $350 for any shape you want.. most know exactly how to make a for lack of better word knockoff of a lost or firewire (minus the construction of course), or Merrick. In the end waves don't care who shaped the board, who owns the company or if the board is bamboo and natural or whatever. Hydrodynamics is all the wave cares about. What the companies want to try to do is MYSTIFY the whole thing. Say they can do stuff that only they know how to do and such. So the more complicated the construction, the further away whats avail to the local guy, the better for them really. I care more about bottom contour, fins, and getting the dims perfect. Don't support your local shaper... support you. It really is better when you can talk directly with the guy about the feel of his shapes and have him adjust to your needs. Better if you can surf with the guy and see that he actually rides HIS boards and is constantly evoloving and fine tuning your craft. Why you would have it any other way is beyond me.
not getting the point.slaters trying to make an eco friendly board,u know polyester or whatever they use is bad for the environment.i thought u surfer dudes are trying to save the planet. first off I never owned nor rode a firewire,or an al merrick,or any other super expensive board.i wish I could afford one but I don't have the bread to fork over for a stick that might break after a few seshes.I buy all used boards,no name brands, and they work great.ur right its not the board, its the surfer, but ur not seeing the bigger picture. and atlantico,u say kooks ride firewires.gab medina the current world champ, which a lot of u would argue is a kook lol, rides firewires.but so does Julian Wilson, hes cool right?michel bourez,he rides firewires.and im sure theres a bunch of others.andy irons used to ride ..lost boards after he switched over from the tokoros, some might argue lost boards are for fat bear belly pothead alcoholics. and shyt who cares if the next man or whoever surfs better than u.we are not on the wct or wqs.we are average people who like to surf.its like any other sport,we are not in competition.its like saying someone riding a mountain bike rides better than my mountain bike.its childish,im sure there are children on here but most of us have some hair on our chest.unless ur pulling into 15footers for 12 seconds and coming out doing a backflip air, nobody can claim they surf better.im pretty sure the sam hammers and raven lundys aren't on here
Hate to break it to you get ready.... THEY RIDE THOSE BOARDS BECAUSE THEY ARE PAID TO!!!!! another secret.... Sometime their buddy, their local shaper, Rusty, someone anyone SHAPES THE BOARD but leaves it completely blank. THEN They put on a Lost sticker along with all the other logos and sponsorships. I'm not saying they all do this.. but some sponsorships just require you to display their logo.. i know MIND BLOWN!!!
And if your wondering why they are paid to do it?!? ( and they're are paid a hell of a lot ) because young minds like cepriano can list off every talented surfer that rides a firewire (no offense cepriano). Marketing.
shyt whats wrong with free boards? if slater bought bic soft tops I would applaud. rusty boards are mass produced, they don't handshape them anymore, watch "how its made." matt biolis is an amazing shaper.lost boards are awesome.i consider al merricks the Mercedes benz of surfing.usually the people with them are little rich kids that cant surf that think if slater or Reynolds rides this board maybe I can be a pro.my 6'2'' that's seen more action than chris kyle in Fallujah has like 10 layers of duct tape on the tail to keep it from absorbing water.i break a board,i tape that shyt back together. whatever slater does I support him.he wants to bang hindus I support him.he wants to cook meth il support him.he dropped quicksilver I support him.thats eastcoast standing together.semper fidela mandela dwella
Yeah, worry not!! I did look at it--a little too much volume for me, and, shaped a bit wider than the one I mentioned prior post
eh,they really don't get paid that well.surfing magazine did a list with how much a surfer gets for their web edits and magazine pics. unless ur in contests winning every one ur really not doing that well.a side shot on a page they get paid like 50 bucks.a cover shot they get like 3 grand.youtube videos they get a grand every 100k hits.i may be off a bit but its something like that. its better to get a real job and surf for fun.no pressure,no need to sell half ur quiver to fund a trip to indo. I remember many years ago when dean randazzo first beat cancer,1st time,i know he beat it 3 times as far as I know, well dean was in the paper and it talked about what he went through with his pro surfing career.selling all but 1 board to get to a contest, having to panhandle in el Salvador for food money, then not doing good in the contest and trying to find family that will pay for a ticket to come home.its not an easy road, unless ur from Australia or California.being from the eastcoast ur nothing.look at sam hammer, that dude been pro since around 95 or something,he hasn't made it far with pro surfing and hes the best we got,2nd under randazzo.randazzo can actually go charge 30footers and make it look good.sams an excellent surfer, but it would take many years to get on his level and the best u get is a free pair of shoes,a few stickers, some free billabong shirts, and a 1500$ check every month.u need a part time job in order to get by.not worth it in my eyes unless ur on the wct making heats
