fighting used to be a good way to let off steam; settle differences and move on. Pre -1998 or so it seemed to me like mostly anyone in the water over the age of 25 was a blue-collar worker, i.e. the type of guy who's used to fights, with not much to lose. If you win, great, you taught the bastard a lesson, if you lost, well at least you proved to everyone and yourself that you had the balls to throw down and maybe that got you some more respect in the lineup. Nowadays - try to show someone whats up and the needle-****ed mother****er will probably press charges and sue your ass. Hardly worth it. So its you win you lose, basically.

Here's my take. Fighting in any situation other than as true last resort is foolish and not worth it. Even when you win, you usually lose. Unless you have some great training ( I don't), or your fighting a cream puff, your likely going to get punched, win or lose. I can take a punch, but I would rather not, because getting punched hurts. Add to that there are no rules in a fight, you usually don't know what your opponent is capable of, or what they are carrying...No thanks. I'll fight only if forced to.

Who knows what prompted the long hair vs baldy fight, but there was a ton of distance between them before it started. It probably didn't need to happen. A little self-discipline from either one of them and it may not have.

It sure as heck didn't look to me like either one of them had much fun. I'd much rather have continued surfing those clean little waves if I was one of them.

Great rational post, you make many good points. I have never needed to fight over surf, nobody messes with me and I don't mess with them. But I do know I don't back down unless they are armed, because I dont own any weapons, never needed one.

Bleeding in the water is bad new for all parties involved.

I, however, am pro-choking and pro-arm hold. I see the objective as being to subdue the opponent safely. Clubbing him with my own bones seems like the least effective way to do it, and could result in unforeseen damage. I have a few yu-yeeeetsu moves from my training days that have turned into my go-to moves in panic mode. (yu-yeeeetsu did I pronounce it right Seldom?). The handful of fights I've unfortunately been involved in I take to the ground, tie up the arm or the neck, squeeze, then politely ask, "Are we done here?" The average joe is perplexed on the ground. The choke is a great way to terminate the fight quickly on your terms.

idk, if you're willing drop your board on the parking lot, might as well throw it at your opponent or use it creatively.

nah...when I was riding a tuflite and had good cash flow, I didn't care, but nowadays I can't afford to be bumping boards. Snakes will still definitely get a stink eye and maybe a "wtf", but, as long as they know they suck and I gets mine's, I can deal with it.
