The lighted board thread got me thinking about some of the really stupid surf products I've seen in my 30 years of surfing. Those include:

    webbed gloves
    Zinka
    the 'turbo tunnel' fin
    surf sunglasses (aka oakley waterjackets)
lyca surf shorts (I'm talking about the cycling style shorts of the late 80s)
    ultra short boardshorts
    front foot traction pads
    go pros

Did I miss anything? (I'm sure there is some really wild stuff from the 60s and 70s.

I want to use everything you mentioned at once while riding a wavejet powered SUP made from faux bamboo and wearing a 1 mil purple wetsuit and a little hat. There will be like 100 little floaty things on my leash. No more tangles!

Can I also add... Jetski's on perfectly make-able waves?

i would say that they have been deemed lame by the general surfing community. I loved the gloves but i can see why they were rejected. they are an artificial aid when just begin in better shape could do the same thing.

Got some cut-eye looks for it, as if I care, but I tried the gloves, too. Felt like my shoulders were gonna rip out due to the extra paddling 'traction.' Huge boost to paddling speed, tho. Gave 'em away, along with a longboard, to a lifeguard in Barbados.

btw, that red Zinka makes people look like they've either been bleeding or have massive sun poisoning.
Can't quite figure out the 'why' of that one.

Waterproof music while surfing seems bogus.

The 2 worst that I can think of that I used were the butterfly fin and traction tape for the entire surfboard. The butterfly fin worked until you tried a bottom turn and the whole board would just shoot out from under you. The freaking traction tape, I remember buying a whole roll of it and you put in on the entire board eliminating the need for wax. Well after about 2 hours of surfing it had wore my skin raw on my knees, nipples and the insides of my legs. Needless to say I tore it off that same day.

On an interesting note I found this page when searching for the butterfly fin. Holy fin contraptions!http://www.surfresearch.com.au/f.html

I admit I tried the web gloves. Little baloons formed between my fingers and it was like paddling with 4 water baloons attached to each hand. Next came the tendonitis. I still have them in a box somewhere.

Hydrofoils... when everything in the surf industry is focused improving performance, hydrofoils go in the opposite direction.

    Inflatable boards... especially inflatable SUPs.

    Handplanes... sorry George.

pumpmaster... I was gonna say kneeboards, too, but then I remembered the hardest turn I ever saw was a kneeboarder. Guess it's that low center of gravity? Anyway... instant respect.

DPSUP... please don't be offended. We're just having fun here... some of us even making fun of ourselves.

Not offended at all, I surf all types of boards, just thought it was funny the way the list was going, pretty soon nothing will be left HAHA

yeah im the fence about kneeboards. never really caught on tho and my thinking is that even if its a good idea the fact that it never took off relegates it to the lame category. for SUP's i would specific to say SUP as a waveriding implement. for cruising on flat days or the bays, they could actually be pretty cool.

how about lifeguards? (wait, not really a product)

Sure they are! They're a product of the tourism industry...
