the leashes.... 'cause Im in total control of my board and how the waves breaks around me. lol. I remember there was a lot of static about that topic.... I like the leash product.
I gotta disagree on the sunglasses. I have a buddy that gets sunburn on his eyes (not sure what part) especially when surfing in clear water. It would be so bad that he would need to wear sunglasses inside for the rest of the day. I guess the glare is too much for him. Anyway, he would only keep the sunglasses on while waiting for a set, then take them off and let them dangle around his neck when he paddled for a wave. While they are lame, they do actually provide a function.
i think kneeboarding seems pretty cool, actually. at least the george greenough/flex spoon style of riding, anyway. i'd love to add one to my quiver if they didn't cost $1500-$2000 to make. the typical kneeboarding done today generally seems a pale imitation of both surfing & bodyboarding...they can fit in tight spaces like spongers, but can't quite make it to their feet...they can kinda do airs, but it looks super awkward...the flex spoon riders can crank super high-g turns & throw spray that makes all but the most powerful surfers look effeminate.
oh, & i'm gonna pile on to the webbed gloves hate. definitely lame, definitely bad for your shoulders. most paddle-power doesn't come from your hands/arms anyway, it comes from your back & shoulders. strengthen those, become a better paddler
Never tried em before, I have bad shoulders as it is, i'd probably blow mine completely out if I did try them from the sounds of it.
i'm also going to add that the gopro is the product that has/had the most potential to actually be cool, but hasn't lived up to that potential & has become lame as a result. i think it suffers from unimaginative placement (always on the nose of the board, always facing the rider), & over-use by people who lack the skill to actually make use of what it offers.
I'll probably never use mine on my board, just don't like the attachment, but i'm looking for ways to get use of it since it was a gift from my wife and I feel bad for not using it ever. Anybody use these to just swim underwater and get footage of the sealife?
I don't have a GoPro, but I think it would be good for filming your friends surf. Could get some good barrel shots if you're paddling out or something.
Similar situation. I have the used it a few times and got some OK footage but it's got to be either hand held or on the head mount to be any good surfing. The coolest footage ever (...lost it on a stolen laptop....) was when we clamped it on my friend's great dane's collar and let him "fight" his mastiff (no mike vick, these dogs live better than I do, they just play around a lot) but the video was effign terrifying.
go pros can be really fun. i love to use them on downhill bike to analyze lines on runs but for surfing, especially with the board mount, i think the footage looks weak/lame.
I think surfing animals are lame! I know its not a product, but its dumb. Saw some guy over seas with a damn lama on his board and thought the lama loved it.
see, that would actually be cool! i guess you've gotta be creative w/ it to make the best use of the thing...the gopro display at the shop where i work has a pretty neat loop that uses footage of makr healey swimming w/ great whites, diving on wrecks, etc...as well as sky divers, base jumpers, car racing, alana blanchard, slater...the list goes on. almost NONE of it features deck-mounted cameras facing the surfer. going off of your dog collar idea, i think it would be pretty neat if somoene mounted one to a sea turtle's shell & let it loose. i bet we'd learn a LOT about where they go & what they do from something like that! or someone could put one on mary lee as she cruises the coast!
