    Hi all,

Looking for some advice here. I just moved to landlocked Tennessee for a great job opportunity, and although the hiking, camping and climbing is great, I fell pretty hard to surfing when I lived in Southern California for two years (Sunset & PCH was my local spot).

The world of East Coast surfing is expansive and foreign to me. I've looked into a lot of spots in SC and GA, but I have no experience tracking swells or predicting good conditions.

Charleston, SC, is only 8 hours away from me and I see that as a viable option. I ride a log. Should I pay attention to Atlantic weather and make the moves based on that? Are storms my only option as far as being able to predict the waves for a weekend?

It's definitely a confusing scenario. It might help to hear if anybody has any experience being landlocked and far away from surf. Just looking for tips on how to go about the planning of something like this.

    Thanks for the advice.

I know SC and GA are the two states closest to you, but they're also two of the worst (GA probably IS the worst) states for surfing on the east coast (sorry sandblasters). Might as well head to Hatteras or FL if you're gonna try to surf at all.

Moving to Belmar might be a good option.

Best waves in the continental US

Dude. Enjoy the hills & dales since you're there. Save your money, remember the first rule of fundage: compound interest. Work the job transfer. Work the network. Find another great job in a few years closer to the surf.

Always, always, always utilize birth control during your spring ruts. Leave your one-toofed miss potato head gf in Tennessee when you depart for the surf life.

You recently moved and have a good job. Enjoy and make the most of what you have while you are there. The grass isn't always greener...
BTW, isn't TN where they invented the TOOTHbrush?

If your gonna surf try to get to NC instead. Or SC. And yes- it depends on storms for swells. Basically all wind swells not ground swell. Try to track one spot with a webcam for a week verses the surf reports here on swell info to figure it out. Surfchex.com has good cams down south.
If you really like surfing that much- start looking for that transfer or new job...

    Knoxville > outer banks
    Chattanooga> Florida or outer banks
    Memphis> closest airport

East coast is very fickle and unpredictable. Trying to drive to SC and actually score on a weekend with rideable conditions would be very difficult to pull off. Unless there is a hurricane spinning off coast. Watch for lows coming across following jet stream and popping off coast. Wind events come and go in a blink.

I would plan trips to PR and Centro and maybe a week on banks during hurricane season to maintain sanity.... Otherwise drink whiskey!

I would just bag your East Coast thoughts. If you are not johnny-on-the-spot, then you're gonna miss it on the East Coast, our swell windows are often measured in hours. Instead, just take your vacation to a place like Costa Rica or Nicaragua for a week or two, and stuff your gullet with surf. Heck I live on the East Coast, but I get in more surfing on a 2-week trip to Nica, then I do in a full year surfing on the East Coast, no joke.

Enjoy Tennessee, I was land-locked in Denver for 8 years, and loved it, but eventually mother ocean called me back.

We have no surf in NC. You really want to go to WV for the big waves.

woah woah woah how many of you have lived in SC/GA hell i lived on the boarder does that make me pretty much a resident of both? well anyways charleston is alright those folly beach death barrels can split your head in half if you catch the lip wrong and you have to be careful and watch out for the lokals doing carolina cutbacks the spray and melt the skin on your face and glass on your board. if you are not lokal dont come here the surfing kkk will break your board in half make it inot a cross and burn it on the beach if you are from kali. best time to come is during summer with all the other tourist kooks, make sure you buy fried chicken with your ebt card on the way to chareston, people who have been on what i think is 18 or 26 know what im taking about, with the giante gas station that says fried chicken accepts ebt.
