Do they ticket for no leashes at CB? Doesn't really apply to me as I always use one but I saw two guys out a CB recently that didn't have leashes. One guy was on a LB teaching a girl to surf on a soft top. The guy had skillz and knew what he was doing. It was pretty calm and he was catching everything smooth as silk, don't think he even got his hair wet. The other guy was the opposite, had no clue period. Doing everything wrong, getting worked every time, and sending his board careening through the surf.

I was out and farther down and the idiot wasn't too close to the kids so I was just keeping an eye on him to make sure he didn't drift down to where the kids were playing. I thought about letting the guy on the LB know they will tic w\o a leash but wasn't sure if that was the case. I know they didn't in the past but the LG's might give you some crap, but didn't know if that had changed. Quick internet search got me a 2008 SI post and a bunch of stuff about dogs.

If there are laws in effect next time I'll be a nice guy and let the LB guy know, and let the idgit know to put a leash on or get a ticket...and if he sends that board into the kids he'll be carrying it home after I break it over his head.

Yeah I know the fuzz up at WB is all about busting a brotha...They ticket for getting to close to piers too? Most I've ever had at CB is just have them whistle us off and tell us to move away.

I ride without my leash on a LB whenever the conditions call for it, like small days where im gonna be noseriding alot. and only started doing this after alot of practice NOT losing my board. bigger days where i have to dive thru waves or im going to be attempting more technical maneuvers i wear a leash.
surfers should know when the right time and place (where there are less people around) is for not wearing a leash.
on to another aspect of the problem...

why not teach children to keep an eye out for objects/hazards in the water? It's not a kiddie pool, it's not a wave pool. its the mutha effin ocean. its dangerous. we teach them to look twice when crossing a road, it only makes sense to have them be aware of stuff in a wilderness area like the surf zone. Yes I said wilderness area...the moment you get past ankle high in any ocean you are where big fish can get at you.

    yes

+ glass on the beach, dogs, and open container

they don't even warn now, just hook people up with a ticket as soon as they catch 'em

    BBG,

Got no problem with people that know what they are doing. In fact, as I mentioned if they do tic I would be nice enough to let the guy on the LB know so he's aware he could get popped.

I've been raising my lil one to be aware of her surroundings and teaching her everything I know about the ocean. But I think its a bit unrealistic to expect a bunch of 8 yr old girls playing in the surf to dodge an 8ft missile coming at them through the surf from some guy who clearly has no control whatsoever over his board and what he's doing. It's not like they were playing in the impact zone down by the pier, they were .5 mile away from any of that.

Just to clarify as I probably explained this poorly...

I'm not the guy who pulls up the truck in front of the lineup and sends an army of rugrats into the impact zone and then gets aggro with any surfer who gets near. I move down, preferably as far away from everyone else as possible,

I'm not the guy who pulls up beside a bunch of fisherman with lines in the water and turns the rats loose then cops an attitude when the fisherman objects to the kids getting caught in his lines. I move down...

I'm the guy who yells at the kids to move when they drift towards A or B above and who constantly tells them to be aware of where they are and what's around them So does the wife.

I'm the guy who tells the kids to watch when they get close to hazards/other people. I point out rips, debris, jellies, etc.

I'm not an instant aggro guy either. I try the nice route first. If the newbie w\o the leash had drifted down, I would have paddle over and said, "hey buddy, you really need a leash. You could hurt someone or yourself, and you're wearing yourself out having to go back to the beach to collect your board every time". If the guy is cool about it, I'd even offer to let him borrow one of mine. If he's really cool and wants some advice I'll give up the 1% that I know. If he tells me to mind my business and to get my brats out of his way then the I go for the board over the head routine.

I hope that explains it better.

Had a friend get cuffed and stuffed for picking up trash at WB. The wives were running a volleyball tournament and he was picking up beer cans and stuff and putting them in a bud light box he found. Mr. Fresh Outta The Academy comes up and goes nuts. Searching everyone's coolers, found nothing, trying to do everything he can to give a ticket. My bro goes to throw the bud light box w\ trash away and the guy freaks and jumps him from behind and put him face down in the sand. Cuffed and stuffed in front of his whole family. My other buddy comes up to see WTF is going on and the guy arrests him too.

They went to court and fought it and not only did they win but the judge said he wanted to speak to the guy in chambers after the trial.

That is appalling. The judge should reward your friend with a 5 minute vale tudo fight with the cop, no legal strings attached.

Their lawyer caught him blatantly lying on the stand, prob why the judge wanted to have a private convo. They ended up riding the same elevator and the one who got jumped gave him a load of crap on the way down.

The other one invited him to step outside his jurisdiction and discuss it. He's dealt with the law enough to know how to phrase it...

They're all local and have heard some more news through the grapevine about Officer Kick@$$. His career isn't doing well.

The guy who got stuffed ain't much, but my other bro is a big fella and he's been in a more than a few scrapes. I know for a fact he's hard to take out, we've rolled back in our earlier days over some stupid drunken stuff. It was a draw and we were pals the next day. I'd love to see Officer Kick@$$ step into a cage with him. If he loses his badge and runs into him, I don't think it will end well.

Good, at least he's not advancing in the LE world...hopefully they'll meet under those circumstances one day, outside of his jurisdiction.

Never thought about the rivers. Question: Would a leash be better or worse? Would suck to see your board go floating down river, but if you got it hung up under something...

WTF kind of third world backwater has laws about leashes on surfboards?

Let me guess, they let SUPs in the surf lineup though

I hear ya bro,and it sounds like you are doing everything to train and protect your lil uns to the best of your ability and I hope nothing ever happens to them in the surf or out of it. I didn't mean to sound so nonchalant in my comment earlier. I just didn't really have time to flesh out my thoughts. Itd be great if we could all try and watch out for lil uns( even other peoples-i know i sure do) the best we can. IMO If that means being preemptive and giving a verbal warning to someone who is an obv danger then by all means that is what our communication skills are for.

Some dude was using a leash on sup in last 2 weeks fell off and leash rapped a rock and couldn't release it and drown. It better be like 2 ft or drown. We use kayaks below to get the loose boards. Safety safety safety.
