....that you're situated, so to speak, in a place that may not have as much swell on the frequency level that you would like. (This rules out MIS & Gaffer, as cool as they are, but they are welcome to chime in.) This situation may describe much of the right coast humpers and all of the gulf coast crews and certainly anyone & everyone in Georgia & South Cackalacky. Here's the question: given the above scenario and yet....you could travel anywhere for surf every weekend..... where would you go? And....how would you do it? MSW, Surflies extended fucasts? Would you go with a machine-like break in MEX? Head north to Iceland or Norway? Take a shot at Barbados or Tortola? Head for PR until it dies in summer? West coast because even when it sucks there it's better than here? HAW....? CR? Nica or Salvador? Panama? Price is no object. Board fees are covered. Rental rig, 4wd, gasoline or diesel it's done, as is lodging: covered. You'll leave on a Friday, but you'll be back on Sunday night or red-eyein' it from the airport to work on Monday morn. Caveat: Indo, Oz, NZ, et. al. are off-limits. Be realistic in our little fantasy action here. Two days of airplanes just to get to the locale are not gonna get you into swell & back in time for your glaring big boss man on Monday morn. Having said that.....go for it....
CR and Nicaragua. They are close, have spots that can get world class, and consistent. They would be my first choice
Cool. Give me the travel info, road warrior. Can't just claim it: gotta give us the master plan. (example; Friday late flight from EWR, cause you're stuck in Brick lol, into MIA; hotel in MIA cause no flights go to Centro until next morning; early flight from MIA to LIR, then taxi 45 mins -2 hrs to surf, evening sesh; next day DP & mid-day & evening sesh; Sunday DP, taxi to LIR, flight home arrive EWR late Sunday night, back in Brick by 1am, mucho java Monday morning. Total surf sessions in premium, warm-water waves: 5.) Like that...
Peru. every kind of wave everywhere, 9hrs of flying, barely any crowds, good food, swell all year, water never really gets below 60 all year. i hope to make peru a reality this winter. my ultimate surf trip before i die is to fiji. i want to surf cloudbreak at least one time before i die. that's what i envision as the perfect wave
nica all summer, barbados or PR (OR if you can dial in the bahamas, go for it) all winter, throw in some euro and iceland for good measure
I don't know about doing this every weekend, but here's a plan anyway. Adjust flexible work schedule to take Friday off. Get the earliest flight (6AM, I think) out of Norfolk Friday to arrive late AM at LAX. Drive rental car up the coast to Ventura. I have a couple friends who surf there. Check in at the Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard Shores. There's a beach break right there off the resort, if I wanted to try that while waiting for friends to get off work. Hit Surfer's Point by the county fairgrounds for DP Saturday AM. Maybe squeeze in a session off NAS Point Mugu later in day. Early Sunday AM drive up to the Rincon point break north of Ventura and right off the 101 on the way to Santa Barbara. Dining: Tri-tip (steak) at Wood Ranch in Camarillo and fish tacos or other great Mexican cuisine at Cabo Seafood Grill and Cantina in downtown Oxnard. Drive back to LAX Sunday evening and take red-eye back to Norfolk.
if you haven't been def go. the land of perfect lefts is just stacked with rights. but listen - you said you want to go in winter - if you mean our winter DON'T DO IT - why? dec, jan and feb are really their ONLY FLAT MONTHS - north peru excepted but you may love how cabo blanco LOOKS fact is its owned and paid for by the locals as such very hard to get a wave there. better to go south march through november. i've been 13x; happy to share info; punta hermosa is where to stay, walk to spots, rent a car when a big swell shows up and burn it 10 hrs up to chicama; best take at least one guide or local type as cops will ask for bribes and it works best when our type pay them.
Yup.... The Carribean is too inconsitent. Indo is too far away. Mexico is, Mexico and I am over that, been there a million times. CR and PANAMA are a close second, but you are still spending every weekend of your life in a thirrd world country and it's only a numbers game before encounters those nice locals with a Machete and no future.... So, yeah, I would fly into Lindberg Field, San Diego, CA every friday evening on a direct flight out of Savannah.... Score consistent waves every weekend, pretty much all year, and head on back.... Maybe I am a creature of Habit, but I would go to the "civilized, cooler water" version of Costa Rica and Mexico. That little place called California. You know, the one that picks up every swell angle in the entire pacific.... The one that gets the same swells as Hawaii, and most of the same swells as CR and such... Yeah, I would go there.... But like I said, Costa Rica would be a close second for sure... More than anything for the warmer water.... We obviously have different seasons, so I guess I would like to spend October through March in California and then April through September in CR.... Bam.
Agreed actually. But, probably just the OBX. I HATE RI YOU HAVE TO USE GROVELERS EVEN ON HEAD HIGH SWELLS WTF!!!!!!! In NC I could use like a really small thin grom board on a head high day and get up easily.
Winter NJ with a flexible schedule to be on it when it gets good. PR is the easiest beginner trip ever. Thats a great warm water getaway quickie its always fun even if its not that big. Now everyones dusting off their surfboards since its getting warm here and is trying to come out and take over the lineups here and claim may june july aug sept oct. You can have it. BELMAR PIPELINE. Have some decency on instagram and fb with the spot landmarks so many guys dig their own graves by bragging about their local zones. Looks like some sort of south swell with warm weather this saturday on the ec dear lord heard belmars working the waves are the best closest to surf shops I heard thats why they build there ...............
You pick San Diego of anywhere in the world. LMAO!. It doesn't hold a candle to Hawaii. My pick is Kauai hands down.
Enjoy your 10 hour flight every friday night and Sunday afternoon. As I mentioned, if this were a real question, distance matters... And doesn't hold a candle? You must not have spent much time in San Diego... It's one thing to prefer a certain place over another, but have fun driving all over Kauai each season to follow the swell directions, while I sit in the same place and let it all come to me...
funny u can go anywhere in the world and everyone says Nicaragua.am I the only one who checks google earth 10x a day looking for new islands with new waves?i saw something the other day,an island south of indo, dont remember the name, its all forest and leads to perfect reefs with perfect waves.dont know how to get there other than a boat or a waterplane and probably have to fight off the indigionous wildlife that exists there. I want to go to a place nobody else will ever find, like the "island" in the movie "the beach" with leo dicaprio.endless pot fields, and endless barrels
im not trying to take a stab at u,but why the phuk would u want to go to san diego,or anywhere in cali and ur location says sd,I don't get it.sure I plan to move and live in cali in the next few years, but why take a free surf trip there and surf with 30k other people.every spot is crowded, waves are good, pesky lifegaurds and cops.great whites but we don't think about that. I think the best part of traveling is seeing countries so different,it feels like u went back in time.for example,in cuba the only cars are old muscle and classic cars, because that's all they have.u go to a place in rural mehico and its cactuses and cartels with machine guns.thats the only part that scares me about mehico, but the cartels are near the border and Baja.puerto is pretty south and I never had any problems there, funny too because down there u see more white people than mehicans. when u see city buildings, traffic lights, and highways everyday,i want to get as far away as possible from the industrial times of amerikka.cali looks pretty cool too with their landscapes and mountains.nj sucks, for the 60000 time, but we don't have crowds in the winter and we get good toobs.
for real, if you are on east coast, Portugal is same flight as SD, the SD call is a really really bad call (unimaginative? unoriginal?) Ive been to both and Portugal gets more winter swell, has better breaks and waaaaay less crowded there are 5 waves better than bird rock in Ericiera alone
