i'm thinking about a trip to liberia (the country in west africa, not the city in costa rica). anybody on here been or know anything about it? sick looking breaks (and still undeveloped) but getting to them seems like it might be kind of sketch. any first-hand experiences?

i'm thinking this might be the place to set up shop for cheap now that zach has predicted the end is near...

I think there's still some political unrest in Liberia - might not be as safe as some other spots (point of trivia: Liberia is the only country in the world (cept the US) that has a capital city named after a US president - Bushville! - (kidding) their capital city is Monrovia, in honor of Prez. James Monroe)

you wont have your blood drained by violent revolutionaries trying to get pumped up to raid a village filled with women and children

I deployed to Africa over the summer. Anything on the west coast is.Very.Very.Very.Very DANGEROUS. So be very mindful of that if you do decide to go there. When I went surfing in Durban we had to be briefed and run chits just to go to the beach. On the bus ride there we saw a legit in progress raping. **** was ridiculous

I am sure the surf is sick... but there is a reason why it hasn't been traversed by many surfers...

i hear you on the possible dangers but i also say sometimes that's what it takes to keep the crowds away. i was a peace corps volunteer in bocas (ol bank) in panama in the early 90s just after the US kicked noriega's ash and the place was EMPTY! as soon as it got safe - boom. the place is huge like old harbor in cr. they're talking about a tgifridays in bocas! no thanks.

So, do the anti-malaria meds & go already.

If you return, let us know how it went.
If you don't return, ask your family to post a few pics online of your head on a spit.

I would imagine that lack of tourism (severe) is going to really jack up your trip cost up, especially considering a plane ticket. Their swell window is our summer, with southern hemi's. That time of year, you can score epic waves for tons cheaper in central america (la libertad el salvador can get your excitement for turmoil boiling) or south america peru / chile or even mainland mexico. If you research it a bit there are tons of uncrowded good breaks in all these spots, and you won't have to worry about your head getting posted on a pike at the lineup.

I dont know dude, one of my college house mates came from liberia as a refugee. He showed me his village on google earth and its straight off the red cross commercial. You may want to look in to non-costa central america or something of you want to go disappear into the jungle. Or if its the thrill you are looking for, there are still plenty of banditos in mex, and airfare is way cheaper.

My work has a program in Liberia and the guy in charge over there has had malaria 4 times in the past several months. There is still a lot of corruption there too so that can obviously create problems. Not the safest place, but not the worst either. FYI, he is white (if that is something that you think might make you stick out). Just like anywhere I think the most concern is for petty crimes, ie theft, not canabalism or kidnapping etc. I could get more info on the safety if you want. After seeing those pics I might ask to get sent there for a little hoping for some swell.

Dude, do your homework and do it. Be 100% sure on routes to breaks, accommodations, everything. Take smart people, who are well traveled who aren't potheads who can't think outside the box. It would be sick location to see, it would be something that you would never forget. Just be on your P's and Q's and don't let your guard down. So many people are just spoiled from surf camps and websites that tell them everything without looking for themselves. You may find an absolute jewel there, I say do it. Don't listen to these lazy bro-brahs, get together a good crew and make it happen. And bring back photos!!
