NJ guy just thought I might chime in here This isn't BAYWATCH bro. While I certaintely agree that $11.00 might seem silly for lifeguards who train hard and compete nationally like Steve-o & Sea Colony / Bethany. This is not the case. You have to understand that 11 bucks an hour is a decent paying job down here in sussex in the summer for the flocks of workers getting ready to start looking. This is seasonal, there are no benefits. Honestly I'm surprised sea colony is offering that much money to start up. Its basically like this, either you jump aboard at a restaurant and hope for big tips and a $3.00 an hour pay check -- where yes 200+ a night is possible and so is $30 a night -- or you get a job that pays by the hour. Seasonal police postions for example varies from 10-12 dollars up and down the de-md shore. Its been a while since you've been in the hunt for a beach summer job I can tell. Your Argument sucks. You saw that comment about video resume, etc etc for a summer job and you took it way to far. The add works to attract a physical hard working waterman or student that wants to do more than sit on his ass in front of a pool you know. That was the message i took from it.
Yes very true here. Having that job really heightens your awareness with daily weather conditions. Being able to hint of an approaching thunder cloud with a sniff in the air and a change in the wind. Gotta get those umbrellas of the beach. Or just when it's getting thicker conditions in the water with a sudden jump in the tide. I used to set up some dailies just past the crest of the beach, just above the high tide line. Then all the other dummies would try to set up in front of them for the "best views". So when the tide came up high in the mid-day, it would wash up all into their towels and their little beach set-ups, but none of mine. Made for a chuckle, gotta keep things fun out there. Plus I would make sure people would pick up their trash when they were leaving. Sometimes I'd just ask them nicely and some people would get all lame on me and act rude. I pretty much enforced it on my beaches and set the example a lot. I think that's an important aspect out there on the beach, and guards should start enforcing that more. Anyway, I'd rather do the umbrella job than be a touron/kook watcher.
umbrellas fly? Mr. Swellinfo was a solar protection specialist. Not an Umbrella Guy. Solar protection specialist have to find the right angle for their clients and the just the right spot on the beach to dodge the high tides. It is really a unique job. Once I had a guy who who was unlucky. An umbrella that blew 50 feet and stabbed him right through the neck. The solar protection specialist (Not Mr. Swellinfo) just happened to have a saw in his bin. Long story short, they cut the pole on both sides, they put him in a helicopter, and he lives on with one bad scar! Solar protection specialist are a unique bunch and rank umongst most engineers with a tab of lifesaving capability! When we guard we often whistle to the Solar Protection Specialists that are surfing all day long to go pick up a kook in a weak rip. We work hand in hand in our operation!
Ok... So I was just bored at work, thought oblove's job ad was a little absurd, which it was. i tried to instigate both sides of the age old arguement gaurds vs. surfers. I admit i did a lame job and my post was a little longwinded and contradictory I appologize for it. Just a few quick points You are representing lifegaurding in De to be something it isnt, there isnt a million ungaurded places to surf in the summer, there is very few. This is why there is a conflict between guards and surfers. I have nothing against lifeguards or their jobs, but i do feel 90% of them are tools with sticks up their ass, trying to be something they are not. The point about the payscales is that $11.00 is proof of how serious people think the job really is. because $11.00 an hr is great payrate for a summer job for kids....people in the 16-19 age range. Which if they were serious about it they wouldnt have 16-19 yr old kids doing it,because they are irresponsible. Not saying all are, and if your 16-19 dont be offended, when you get older you realize you were. And if you are 16-19 and you are completely responsible your lame and missing out on being young, its the only time you can justify being a carefree dumbass. "Anyone ever hear of Greg Noll,Mike Doyle, Ricky Grigg,Duke Kahanamoku,Eddie Aikau,Derrick Doerner and Tom Blake???" Yes and they are in fact true waterman. They were lifegaurds to watch over and help people in need, not to dictate what you could and could not do like most lifegaurds do in this region. They were also the gaurds because they were the select few who could handle the conditions of the places they gaurded when it was at its worse. They didnt need to pass tests are show proof of the abilities it was unspoken and understood. Argueing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics, even if you win...you're still retarted
Man I must be old, $11 an hour to guard sounds great! I was paid $4.50/hour back in the 80's . Guarding was the toughest job I ever had, dealing with people, teenagers that wouldn't listen and sitting on the stand watching on those rare days of perfection, knowing that the swell was dropping and the wind was switching and hight tide was gonna be at 5 when I got off. I take my hat off to you guys who guard and surf I know what it's like.
$11 Remember $11 is a starting point. Yo Will C, I left SCBP 2 years ago. In fact, I haven't guarded for $11 an hour since 1997. SCBP starts at 13 or 13.50. I'm way beyond that figure. Again, if anyone wants to guard, see my original post and PM me. Most of the beaches guarded in Delaware are none-surfing spots. MD has guards all over, but they do work with the surfers (not enough as I would like) and AssaT. is a very close drive. The only spot in DE that has guards that bums us all out is Southside. But if you boogie, you can go anyway (except for the jetty)? I know 30 plus spots in NJ where there is NO guards. Umbrella gigs are hard to come by and local agencies have cracked down on the leniency. SO ONCE AGAIN, does anyone want to guard???
NJSur4, You are a douche! That last comment wasn't funny at all. And I found it offensive. Karma's a *****! I hope your kids turn out that way. I wasn't gonna chime in but, after reading this I felt the need to.....Learn to spell before you talk 5hit.
easy son Ok I didnt use spellcheck and typed it in less than two minute literally. Why would you chime in? And for your comment pretty hypocritical from an individaul whose user name is a play on a horrible disease. I started a new thread about the lifegaurd thing because I dont want to waste Only Boys love time on this anymore..
For the most part I think the lifeguards are pretty cool.. but there are some that think they are gods gift to earth and look down on anyone who doesnt guard.. and for seacolony im not sure if this is true but i hear you do train mostly for competition like your foreign croatian or something doesnt even take the stand but instead just practices paddleboard or something all day
1. There is no spell check. And, as many words as you misspelled you just look unintelligent. 2. I chimed in because of your childish statement. 3. Hypocritical? Do you even know what that means? How can you debate my username vs. your statement? I'm done now....and will let you continue your pointless but entertaining banter on lifeguards.
1) there is spellcheck 2) i misspelled two words, just more than once. And I am definately not intelligent because I am still go backworth with you clowns. 3)I do not know what aquaholic means, other than a term for someone who over indulges in drinking water to the point they die. How can I debate it, because your playing mr. PC telling me my childish statement is offensive when in fact you username it itself can be viewed as offensive, in some completely misconstrued sort of way.
