I've been hitting the knee-highs at low tide with my son & got to thinking....on 1 to 2 foot days, what do you guys have a better time with: A log or a sponge? I'm not talking about what has more diversity or value and I'm not interested in doing other stuff. I'm talking about nothing over knee high coming in and you need some wave time.
Well if you want wave time i say longboard, but if you want to try to pull into some knee-high barrels than go with the sponge.
I got my first longboard this past winter figuring I can use it on the smaller days.Didnt think it was going to be flat almost every day. There some hope for this weekend thou.
I would have to say Longboard. I have been having a lot of fun doing the LB thing on smaller days. Back in the day, I would pump through ankle high slop on my Shortboard, but now that I just throw the log out there and noseride tiny surf, its pretty f*OI*&in fun... As far as sponging, the ONLY situation where a sponge is better than a surfboard of some kind is if its REALLY big out, or super heavy. Sponges are good on slabs and huge inverted faces, other than that, there is no point to looking at one if you are a surfer.... Bodyboarding small surf is no fun. You might as well bodysurf. Thats much more productive than flopping around on a sponge in ankle high closeouts. Bodyboards need some size so they can get their speed up. Logs take off like rockets in small surf. Thats why they are gigantic. my opinion
I'd say a longboard for sure. There's nothing I'd rather be on in real surf than a bodyboard but it's no fun when it's small and weak...and on the flip side, a longboard can be really fun when it's small and weak.
a log for sure...a nice big, heavy, single fin log. keep that momentum going...inertia is your friend! i've had some days on mini waves that have been incredibly fun...far beyond what i was hoping to get out of the session. sponges are fun to mess around on now & then, but only in beach break shore pound, & not on a regular basis.
I totally disagree. I actually hate shore pound and I bodyboard. I don't know who could find a place like the wedge or waimea shore break fun. Risking getting paralyzed for a 2 sec ride on a monster close out that smashes you into the sand. There garbage waves with high risk low reward. There's nothing better than a long clean breaking open face ride to carve on with a bodyboard. To each their own.
I say go to your surf shop and get this board made by Catch Surf. Its called the "BEATER" Its floats like a bigger board, you can surf it but you can also use it as a body board. The thing is rad and for 160 bucks you cant go wrong. I got it just to play with on smaller days and now i love it. you can stand up on it and cut down the line or just lay on it in the little knee high barrels. def try it out

i'm not THAT crazy...by shore pound (& i guess i should've clarified this) i meant nothing over a few feet in height. i'm not interested in maiming myself. Zop- interesting video, tho i found it to be a lot better once i turned the sound off! i may have to look into getting one of those...for just these types of days!
I say sponge, as long as you don't mind telling your kids that you are really a chump and not the cool dad they think they have...
Yep... Longboard or bodysurf if it's knee high and actually breaking. The only time to bodyboard... for me... is if it's shorepound. And it's a total riot. A lot of fun...
longboard - I love me some bodyboarding at my local when its slamming right on shore but I seem compelled to do it on average about twice, 3x a year, whereas I pull my longboard out to fool around with knee high peelers at least 2-3x a week in the summer
The beater board looks sick, I might get one for these super samll days. In the mean time...... bodysurfing w/ a hydrofoil and fins is a great workout and gives you a totally different perspective on the wave.
