Hey guys and gals, Just started seriously surfing this past year and lookin to buy a board come summer time when i start to work. Im 6'3" 185 and beginner to intermediate any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Generally speaking you want to start off with a bigger board, as it is the easiest way to learn the basics. Take a look at this How to Buy a Surfboard article. You should find some good board buying advice there. Do you know what size board you have been riding thus far? Depending how far you have advanced on your first boards can help you decide where to go from there.
Think of the 3 "R's" when doing this man. Reduce, re-use, recycle. Before you make the kind of commitment it truley takes, find out if it's really going to be your thang. Buy a used board. Please don't run out and buy another cheap pop out manufactured overseas because you want a new board to learn on. You can find GREAT deals with used boards in todays economy (check out the surfer forum or Swaylocks classifieds) that will be perfect for you. If you are really truley dedicated to learning, you will destroy this board in a few months, which is great because you should also learn how to fix your own dings, anyway. Once you feel comfortable and feel that you have advanced enough to get a "trusty stick", go to a local shaper and talk with them. Buy local, the shaper will help create a board for you that will work best for you and where you surf locally. I hope this helps.
