I've always bought HP Pavillions. My current unit is intermittently fugging up. shuts down after being on for a while. sometimes screen looks pixalated and I have to turn off.

what kind do you guys have? Anyone have a Mac? I hear the new one is suppose to be something special.

I quit buying the big brands after the motherboard on my top of the line dell XPS died after just 2 years (past warranty). Turns out it was a proprietary motherboard and I couldn't find another...even dell didn't have any.

Any of the "boutique" companies are going to be more expensive, but it's all quality and no bull****. I currently have a kick-ass system built by Origin, but I'd also consider Falcon Northwest, Cyber Power, Digital Storm, etc.

I just bought a new computer. I've been windows forever, and almost went the MAC route.
Ended up going with a Dell and Windows 8, and I"m hating it.
Wish I just shelled out the money for the MAC, and may end up doing that eventually.
Windows 8 is brutally terrible IMO.

I stopped buying the name brands and now I just build my own when I need a new one.
that way you are able to get a lot more power for a lot less money.

I bailed on apple back in 2000 and would not ever buy a mac computer. Apple is so full of themselves and if you ever have an issue you have to pay for tech support. Windows machines are cheaper and compatabilaty is never an issue.

I've had Macs since 1984 (the original 128k mac!)

In 1995 I bought a W95 machine because it was what we had at work. Hated it. Used it for a couple of months and went back to Mac.

I bought a W8 convertible last year because I was tired of carrying a MacBook Pro and an iPad around, and I thought this would do the job of both. It isn't perfect, but its innovative and feels as bleeding edge as my 1984 Mac felt back then.

I'm very happy with W8, but I can see how its jarring when switching from W7.

W8 NEEDS a touchscreen, otherwise it simply will not be the full experience. Having said that, I use a Surface Pro for everything except photo editing (because my whole photo library is on my mac and I'm too lazy to transfer it over) and connect it to an external keyboard, mouse and monitor and use it as my daily everyday PC. It has made travelling so much easier!

To me, Macs are now more about industrial design rather than interface excellence, and I'm not willing to pay more simply for pretty industrial design.

I do like that their latest OS is nicknamed Mavericks, tho'. :)

I too have a Mac Book. Have had it since 2008 and never had one issue or virus threat. I love Apple products though, have an iPhone, 3 iPods and two iPads

Chich, I agree with MFitz...build your own...you can hook it up with a lot of memory, tons of storage space and a good graphics card for about the same cost that your going to pay for one with less features.

And the plus side is, once you've built it (which you will find out is very easy) you will know how to fix it if anything ever goes wrong.

I had a problem a couple years ago, thought a horrible virus had ruined my computer....started with the least expensive part...the battery pack...and waalaah...hooked that badboy up and i was back in business.

Go Mac. More expensive up front but no worry about viruses, etc. Went Mac and I'll never go back! I have an iMac, iPad and iPhone. Use the iPad constantly; at under 500 bucks a great purchase. For what I do, way better than any laptop.

^^^ Agree the iPad works much better at times than the Mac Book does.

thanks for the input. valid points on both sides of mac. Best Buy has a 5g ram, 500g mem HP Pavillion for $288. you think all new components would be that cheap for rebuild? Don't need much in a tower. most of my info is on external harddrives. Just need it to find "free" stuff and check waves.

My MacBook is 5 years old and you can barely use it. We are on the second battery, and it doesn't hold a charge. The OS is painfully slow. We even deleted everything and started from scratch a few years ago. I would never buy another Mac PC. My self built tower lasted 10 years, and only get retired because the main HDD finally gave out. I would personally go for a boutique PC or laptop. I am not an apple hater, btw. My iPhone 4S has given me over 2 years of reliable service, and the new 5s seems just as good.

I will say Brew is right, for the past two years the battery on my Mac Book has not worked right. It always has to be plugged in, not a big deal since I only use it at home and if I need to be unplugged I use the iPad, but still a pain.

I think that's the problem. I unhooked it and drug it out for close inspection. Behind the fan the cooling fins were clogged with enough hair to make another dog.

Haha, that's exactly what I thought too!

I'm a Mac user, never had an issue and I think they are so much easier to use than a pc. My wife's a graphic designer, pc's can't run the programs she uses for crap. That, and Macs are essentially silent while pc's can often sound like mini jet engines.
