Does the lower part of assateague break good? If it does that could be like cape may because it faces south. Oh and also is there any beaches in assateague that face differnt directions then oc md and deleware?
Assateague Generally it's pretty north to south but down in Chincoteague 40 miles south of Ocean City, there's a sweeping bend wrapping around that faces somewhat south. The only time I was there it was typical summer shore pound, but it can get good from what I hear. When I lived in Cape May, the Cove didn't really exist. A south facing beach would be optimal with a strong north east swell and accompanying NE wind because not only would the waves clean up by wrapping around the curvature of the beach, the wind would be offshore. Back in the day (I won't say when) we had our pick between IRI northside on a strong south wind and swell, or Northend Assateague on a strong NE wind and swell. We could drive to IR, but had to paddle across the inlet to Assateague. With mainland parking now limited because Stinky Beach is no longer Stinky Beach but Ritz City, the preferred option is via boat. I've not heard of any issues lately, but the DNR and CG is a WAY bigger presence in the inlet area than they ever were in the 60's and 70's. As the CG once did in South Padre Island in Texas, they could start citing you for paddling across because you weren't wearing a life preserver and you were a watercraft. I've seen the CG hassle a couple of kids for anchoring their boat 100 yards off of the inlet just this year to surf the inlet. In the winter nobody cares generally, but summer is a whole different story. All that and now gas is way to pricey @ $3.50 a gal. and more to make highly mobile surf checking reasonable. Generally you're better off getting your local spots wired for which swell and winds work best for what spots- that and the shifting sandbars, or lack thereof. This year it seems like the surf Gods are doing their best to crowd us all into one spot by limiting sandbar development everywhere.
south assateague island I live near chincoteague/assateague island and have been investigating its breaks as i have just purchased my 1st board. the very tip of assateage island curves around an inlet called Tom's Cove. the tip faces south and then curves around to face sw. The southern tip is a 2-3 mile walk from the beach parking lot and is possibly also accessed by a nature trail rd. with a $75 a yr permit. The Bad News: the southern tip is off limits till september (open fall\winter months) because of nesting plover. So whats up with south facing beaches? is it worth the wetsuit and the hike? the winds definitely seem to come from the se alot.
Yeh when i looked at a map of assateague i saw toms cove and i thought that might be good. Durring winter that might be a good spot to try out, but it sux its far away.
