evryone stop *****img at least yall got to surf! i was in the heart of north cackalacky the whole swell. god i felt trspped. i am never living inland that's for sure. and yankee, hit me up next time you come to the pier here in VB. that's my homebreak.
You sir have no idea what you are talking about. Well maybe about jersey you do, but you have no clue bout california. Just cause you couldnt find anything empty doesnt mean they dont exist.
oh yeah? YEAH!? well i guess i need to go back again and prove my point, say, for a solid week. heck, make it two weeks. i need a trip.
Actually some of the spots you hike to are the worst. Trestles being a prime example. Crowds are based on wave quality. They have breaks out there that are unreal. Trestles is a Fast cobblestone bottom hollow wave(safer than boulders) with a wave that basically never closes out. Where do you have that in Jersey period? We don't have that in Rhody even. Just find some mediocre(by cali standards) break and you can have it to yourself out there. Are you going to find a world class break like trestles uncrowded in southern california? Of course not. Northern and central? Absolutely. Of course then you have other "friends" in a grey suit you'll be sharing the lineup with. But you can absolute find lots of break equivalent to jersey's good breaks with no crowds in San diego.
Oh yeah....can't handle all these calif crowds. LOL Ocean beach san fran. Super well known spot, overhead day. Huge beach with peaks everywhere and just a few guys out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmbDxS-B0Os
Some other points to consider: Yes, it's a huge state, but the population is around 38 million. That's like 1/10 of the whole country, and most of those people live on the coast. Combine that with a serious surf culture and great weather and you have an arse-load of surfers. Also, to Shark's point about wave quality, which is a key point. From what I've heard, if it's waist-high no one goes out. For us East-Coasters, that's a fun day in the summer. So, yes, I can see how it's possible to avoid crowds in Cali, but all in all, it's a damned crowded state in most aspects. I am not speaking from experience. I want to make that clear.
I'm not doing a wikipedia search and taking it at face value. lol Dude. Just look at the surfline cams from the beach breaks. Lots of empty peaks.. Look at the forecast. You can't compare east and west. It's so silly. It's not fair. Let's just enjoy what we can here. Also, the "onshore winds" are basically just a light local sea breeze. It just chops the face up a little. It's not VAS or blown out. It's just not perfect and people their are spoiled. California has 840 miles of coastline. NJ has 180 miles. Most of jersey's coastline is over developed at lacks surf breaks. California is loaded with them Population of California = 38 million. Majority of population in Los Angeles area. Very little in north/central area's. Population of NY metro area = 24 million. That's all with easy access to nj breaks. New yorkers are known for hitting up jersey beaches obviously. Population of NJ = 8 million Population of PHiladelphia metro area = 6 million
shark hunter doesnt know squat, he reminds me of PJB except more banal. There are a bunch of empty peaks in NJ if you know where to go (that work on the same directions and handle just about the same amount of size as 'bro peak' in BELMAR) Empty peaks in Cali too, I bet its hard to find them south of rincon, but they are there too
For a lot of brahs that claim to have several buttsloads (that's for you M.A. - throwback!) of Cal knowledge, there's a lot of difference in their facts/opinions. I've probably surfed a dozen different CA breaks in OC/SD/LA counties and visited or scouted a dozen more (not counting SF area). The only fun-prohibitive crowd I've experienced in all that charging was the 45-person lineup on the 1.5' "peak" at Doheny the third Sunday in September. Any wave I didn't catch but could've in any other session was my own fault or that of some TC that I either have a brief regulatory word with or give him a look that makes an even firmer point. These sessions were during several decent swells in the last 6 months including the one across the whole west coast during the Maverick's event. I've remarked before on here of my high opinion of the functionality and etiquette of the average CA lineup and find it to be more conducive to a good session per number of surfers than anywhere else I've been, and the list is starting to add up. Not sure if you guys are mistaking flocks of birds for surfers at these breaks, but it's clear charging as far as I've seen. There's TC's anywhere you go, but I've had far harder of a time finding a fun sesh with half the number of surfers at the more traveled Rhodey breaks on days of good swell. The EC seems similar throughout.
Funny you say that, actually been listening to them a bit more these days...esp since yankee told me Jim Morrison surfed...picked up the remastered version of The Soft Parade, cool tune on there called Od Whiskey, Mystics, and Men, good stuff.
