I havent had a dog or even the desire to take one under my wing in 25 yrs. Then along came Daisy. Half pit half rott. Cutest thing ever! I was shocked when me wife showed her to me and said what do you think? First off both of us have been strongly against the idea but our daughter (only n youngest child) has been slowly breaking us down. We never really had the time to take on the added responsibilities until recently. We've both had dogs and pets growing up and into adulthood. Anyway we applied thru the agency and have set up a meet n greet that keeps getting put off by the rescue group. The longer we wait the more hesitant we've become. Thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated as I teeter on the fence. IMG_6329.jpg

Do it. Many dogs need good homes. Sure it'll add a little more work to your life but they earned that title as man's best friend for a reasonne.

Dogs are great. Do it if you want to structure your child with responsibility. Have them care for the dog. Easy to say because your intentions will be good but it may back fire. Don't do it if you feel your time is too valuable and you have enough just taking care of kids. Good dogs are made with patience and training, constantly.
    Good luck and enjoy!

These are mine. Both got pit in them. Both are the sweetest and most loyal. great deterrent against ne'er do wells trying to take yer schitt. I can't imagine not having at least 2. Pits used to be called nanny dogs.

Devil's advocate here... My son found a puppy on the side of the road 6 years ago... He then went to his 4th year of college, Europe, moved to a house that doesn't allow pets... So obviously the dog is mine and my wife's. When we travel, the dog has to be boarded or travel with us. Getting up pre-dawn patrol to walk the dog can get old fast. Vet bills can be expensive too. You do get unconditional love; and we do love "our" dog and will never get rid of her, but we wouldn't have gotten her at this time if given a choice. It's a 15 year commitment...
I've got an 18 year old cat, too... She takes care of herself, but soon I'll be doing nursing and hospice for her in the near future. did that two years ago for our 17 year old tom cat. didn't sleep much for two weeks as I made sure he was comfortable during his last days.
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but go in with your eyes wide open.

Yep, no such thing as a free dog. The little black dog of mine was "free". Two weeks later, she had mange, and 500 bucks later, she was free of mange. My daughter has a half pit half Weimaraner. Giant orange beast. Jumped through the glass door on a Sunday. 1500 bucks for that first treatment.

As i said in the op weve both had numerous animals. Funny thing is at least from my experience we very rarely took our pets to the vet and all lived fairly long lives. Of course as they got up in age and close to the end we couldnt avoid trips to the a vet. Never had a pure bred except a chiuaua sp? That dog lived 22 yrs.
Boarding was a big issue but we have a good support system w friends and a lot of family. Everyone we know has a dog(s) and we sit for them all.

surf trips/vacations get more expensive if you don't have easy-going, super cool friends who will take care of your dogs. otherwise, i have no complaints about my little furry homies. they are my ride-or-die motherf**kers.

Either you do and you're willing to adjust or you don't and you're not willing to adjust. Either way shut up...put on your big boy pants and make a decision

I have an almost 4 year old boy, a nearly 3 week old boy, and a 7 month old boxer puppy so I don't really have any tolerance for wishy washy bs...but my life has never been more rich...either you're a selfish ahole, or you're an unselfish ahold - you decide

Absolutely do it. Dogs are so much better than humans. I'll just chip in with two thoughts:

    1. Remember that when you walk your dog, it's a crucial & wonderful part of the day being for the dog not you.
    2. Today, try to be the person that your dog thinks you are.

OP, do one better, get TWO dogs. I always have two. My black lab died about 15 months ago and it was weird only having one. So now I'm back to two with my new pitty. His name is Ball Licker. Him and my other pit, Wes, are best buds. They are like Sith. There is always two, a master and an apprentice. Ball Licker is Wes's apprentice in evil. It's awesome.
