Has anyone ever traveled to this area and found good waves in the Osa Peninsula? Bosque Del Cabo is the place we were looking to stay and is a great overall hotel but the wave quality and consistency is a little unknown and recently discovered. If anyone has ever traveled and or surfed this area I would appreciate the feedback. Thanks
Yes. I would recommend flying into Puerto Jimenez (Nature Air) and renting a 4"x4" car (a couple of vendors right at the airport) because the rocky road out to the point is super rough and you will be crossing two streams depending on the time of year you are going. Matapalo is usually the biggest on a swell, but more wind sensitive. But just east of the there are two right hand rock points, Pan Dulce and Backwash Bay that are super rippable! They connect at high tide and are sheltered from the predominate winds. If go back into town, Pt. J, you can talk to some of the captains of the fishing boats to see if they will to run you out to Pavones. About 45 mins each way. Average price is about 50,000 colones per boat/day. Good on a straight S or big SW swell. Have fun.
You got to watch yourself in Matapalo. that's an expert slope. You could be surfing head high waves for over an hour, then fugging 20'+ monster sets come and clean house. Pan Dulce is the girls section.
Don't know about the whole undiscovered thing. I would surely bet that unless you're up on the Mosquito Coast somewhere, then it has been well surfed over. It would be very rare to find a spot in Costa in which you are the only one in the line-up. Not to say it can't happen but these days everyone and their brother/sister go to Costa. On that note, Matapalo isn't a bad spot. Depending on the swell the waves get pretty decent there. Though that area tends to be more inhabited by hippies and more known for camping and living on the beach. I think no matter what if you go to Costa you should be able to score some kind of surf. Even if its flat everywhere Hermosa usually holds at least a chest to head high wave pretty consistently. I've been on a few trips down there in which its been too big and we had to find a break that could handle what was being dished out! A lot of the more common breaks in Costa when it gets big tend to close out. Take a little time to find out the swell direction and maybe talk to a few locals to find out which break would be best at that time.
Yea...no secrets down there. Love the place...drive into Pavones and hunt down Marshall. He is the mayor, pimp, and president of the jungle and knows evey square inch of that area. He is a pleathura of information and a pretty dam cool, laid back, brotha. Stay in pavones and take your boat trips to matapalo. Pura Vida man!!!
