"Here is my list, in order, of the five most advanced wave-riders of all time: 1) George Greenough, 2) Mike Stewart, 3) Wayne Lynch, 4) Shaun Tomson, 5) Kelly Slater" discuss
I might would say switch ST and KS order but other than that pretty good list. I think Slater has advanced surfing more than Shaun. Shaun was/is great but Slater is better.
I think you can make a case that one of the following - Shaun Tomson, Mark Richards, or Michael Peterson needs to be on the list because of they pioneered riding 6 foot boards in essentially the modern style. Kelly AND Curren arent both needed.
Maybe I don't know enough about ST, and I'm not taking anything away from him, but Curren defines power surfing, right?
greenough was so far ahead of his time, we're STILL trying to catch up. i have misgivings about lynch & tomson, though. i think lynch is pretty far ahead of his time now w/ his finless stuff, but tomson wouldn't have accomplished what he did w/out other in his generation pushing him, & he wasn't THAT much better, IMO. bob simmons, on the other hand...like greenough, he was on a completely different trip than his contemporaries.
