Hi, I'm looking for a recommendation on a vacation on Maui. I am a NJ surfer and looking to get in as much surfing as my family will allow me on a vacation to Maui in June 2012. Where is a good location to stay (on Maui) so I have the best chance of getting in as many sessions as possible? Thanks!
The winter season is over and the summer season will have started. As you can see in this map there are some shadow effects from the Big Island, but not nearly as sever as Maui and the other islands cause to the Big Island for winter swells.
I would suggest staying in Lahaina, I think you would be close to the surf spots (Breakwall) and surf shops, plus it has plenty of options for accomodations. When I was in Maui, I was at Kihei, which is more on the southwest side, with resort style beaches that were all flat. No choice since I was part of a wedding party in one of the hotels out there.
I would suggest doing some research for the time of year you will be visiting. Plenty of resources out there like the shadow map I posted above.
omaui.com is a good resource. Hookipa is on the north shore and is always rideable but often windy. There are many spots around that area. Since your going in june you may want to stay in Lahaina area since you will have access to both Honolua bay and south shore depending on the swell in the water. If your family rents are car you will def be able to find waves, just keep an eye on that omaui site for swell details. good luck
If you have the means....stay at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua,....if not, Lahaina has eveything....maybe even Kannapali (sp)....
