If this environmental debacle continues, I'm out. My family came here in the early 1900s, settled down when bear roamed the beaches of Lake Worth. The water sucks and the people here are nuts. If I can't enjoy the ocean, and don't want to blow a gasket, I need a plan B.

Clear warm water, good waves, nice reefs, safe habitat for wife and I is the goal.

I'm thinking Panama. (not Panama City, Florida - I'm talking Panama Canal). Anyone know anything about Coranado, Pedasi, or anywhere else in Panama that is friendly to gringos and has the above mentioned qualities. I can work from home, as long as there is high speed wi fi. I'm officially on a 3 year plan. 2 years if things go as planned. An extra year may be necessary to brainwash/bribe my wife.

She want's to live in Ireland. I don't like cold water. And it costs more. But that is plan C. That and a good wetsuite.

    Please advise. Thanks ya'll.

For what it is worth, Ireland is nice. Don't dismiss your wife.
Whatever you do, do NOT go to PR or the Caribbean. Too much economic problems there are leading to high theft, homicide, drugs even junkies fear, etc.
    just opinion, man.
By the way....Panama can get unbearably hot; no fun to even leave the damn house.....
And good luck--I hope you find the Shirangila (sp?) you seek.

I wish I had the balls to do something like move to Panama, but that just isn't going to happen in this lifetime with my wife.

However, I make a hobby of reading those expat articles on Yahoo pretty regularly, and Panama has repeatedly been listed as a very safe, affordable destination for Americans looking to escape the madness. One of the big things is they have U.S. trained doctors and modern medical facilities...maybe not such a big deal today, but if you're looking to make this a lifetime decision then health care will be a factor.

I have nothing else to offer- I've never been there- but I think your looking in the right place. Ireland would also be pretty awesome, but man, the cold...

Either destination is preferable to Florida, IMHO.

So. I was wondering where you are on this plan? I find the allure of it intoxicating and a similar plan is on my mind, wife or no wife i'm making a purchase of a small place in central America. Sometimes you have to take that leap of faith and if you can't make yourself happy how can you make anyone else happy?

I think you have a good plan there! We've given serious thought about moving to Panama also. Cambutal is where we'd like to end up though. Coranado is nice if we really want to be near the big city and the expat community is thriving. However the waves are generally lacking and if I were to move to a third world country I'd really want a little more privacy and consistent waves. Pedasi would be a great option as it has everything you'd need. The expat community is solid, there's a good number of solid waves in the area plus it isn't overdeveloped. Like someone else said it can get really hot but the pros of healthcare, surf and growth make it a real option.

Thailand might go sideways in a hurry. The king is going to day anyway now, the rural folks all voted for a party which was overthrown in a coup and the heir to the throne is feckless and unpopular. And you can go to jail quickly for saying anything which might be interpreted as insulting to the king.

Thanks! The Azuero Peninsula seems to be the place. Both Pedasi and Las Tablas tout a nice lifestyle. I'm still a ways a way from realizing the plan, but to start anything, for me, it requires focus and visualization for it to manifest into reality. So I now have a jumping off point. Brevard County FL is way more doable.
