Wow OP. Just wow. Going out into the ocean during storm swell and not knowing how to swim? That post might as well be a suicide note.

Learn how to swim, or you will die in the ocean. Period.

I'll try not to be an a hole (that's unusual), but you should learn to swim before you step foot in the ocean again. First off, you will feel much more comfortable and confident. Also, you will at some point need to swim most likely in a hairy situation. A lot of your fear will go away after you learn to swim. Swimming is really the prereq to surfing. You are really putting yourself and others at risk. People who are good swimmers still drown in the ocean but they have a better chance at survival than non-swimmers.

I still have been in some bad situations and I'm a strong swimmer. Sometimes hold-downs don't care about your swimming abilities but when you resurface, you need to be able to swim. I think swimming and breathing exercises for underwater hold-downs are very crucial to surfing especially bigger surf. I wouldn't even be surfing if I didn't know how to swim especially wouldn't take that risk of leaving my kids without a father.

Can you imagine one of your bros saving some guy and dying in the process, then find out the guy who was out and got in trouble can't even swim???

I'd drag his asse back in and drown him myself.

Yup...this pretty much sums it up (although I might have expressed in a slightly different tone:)

The whole knowing where the sandbar is theory kills me dude. Go to the Y as one suggested and spend time in the deep end and overcome this. Otherwise, you will always be a hazard.

When I was lifeguarding I'd get people all the time who, (if they were male) after being rescued, would tell us all about how they know how to swim. My point is that if you can't swim, and you find yourself into a real situation you're going to panic, and then its all over.

Or kick himself in the nards.
I love the water and, growing up, had to prove I could swim every year before being allowed access to the pool.
I can't count how many times I've had to make it in sans flotation device. I guess if you were in the line up, and I lost my board, I'd paddle your bloated arse in.

yea frost, its pretty damn ignorant to put everyone elses lives in jeopardy because you want to be a surfer.

the amount of time you spend on here could be used more wisely, ie. in a pool getting some lessons.

drowning isnt fun and saving people isnt fun either.

People will always slam you(and others) on here no matter what. There's a ton of major league A-HOLES and CRAZIES on here.I know I said I was done with the forum and I am, but I don't want to see you get hurt Frost.

Frost, I couldn't' swim either when I first started as a little kid. This is potentially dangerous. Especially if you're going out with no lifeguards.(I only went where lifeguards were) If you're going out in stomach high or less waves at a life guarded beach you should be ok as long as you don't go past stomach deep and have a good leash and know how to tread water/float! If you sink like a rock and don't know how to float I wouldn't advise going out into the ocean until you learn to float in deep water. You have to give the lifeguard time to get you out.

Going out in a tropical swell or any size-able swell head high plus swell without knowing how to swim very well is suicidal. Leashes get ripped. You can't rely on the board. People who swim well can drown in big conditions. Someone not knowing how to swim going out in a tropical swell is insane.

That being said you HAVE to learn to float so the lifeguard has time to save you if a rip drags you out, which can easily happen.

First thing to learn is survival floating. THIS IS A MUST.

I used to have trouble with floating effortlessly until I realized a wetsuit floats you! Being able to float without effort/energy is really important. Most people drown from getting tired. If you know you can float with no effort it helps you not panic and keeps you safe.

Get a 4/3 wetsuit. Now you'll notice you can float WITHOUT effort! Seriously. It's effortless. The rubber acts as buoyancy. Wear that at all times. If it's really hot down in sc, you can probably use a 3/2 that's a little loose and you shouldn't get too hot.

In order to float without a wet suit I personally have to expend effort(if you're really fat you might float better. Everyone is different) Just spread out your arms and lean back a little. With a 5mm winter suit you can float upright without kicking. Seriously. That's too thick for summer in SC obviously though. I would not go in the water without a wetsuit for now though. You need to know how float and a wet suit gives you effortless buoyancy.

Once you can float, swimming is actually easy. Don'y worry about being able to swim putting your head under the water and breathing by twisting to the side. It's difficult to learn breathing timing. Also, You don't swim like that out though surf anyway. You need to see the ocean and if choppy waves that breath might not be there when you turn your head to the side doing the breast stroke. I still cant' do that and I can swim just fine. I've lost a board before in overhead surf too. Learn the backstroke and the breaststroke with your head out of the water. YMCA gives lessons. Get comfortable with those.

Learning to swim is really important!

BUT PLEASE LEARN TO FLOAT! And remember if caught in a rip swim to the side.(you can't swim, so just yell for help and float if you get caught in a rip). Stay where the lifeguards are until you can swim a few laps comfortably in other back and breast stroke.

Best of luck frosty and stay safe!

Hey y'all. Please don't misinterpret me here. I think it's AWESOME that folks actually get TAUGHT how to swim. I just haven't really run into 'em knowingly. I ain't Michael Phelps, but I can make it back to shore from a couple hunerd yards out without my board. Even so, there are definitely times that even a good swimmer gets noivous. MOST IMPORTANT THING is stay calm.

That would be next to impossible for a non swimmer.

    For y'all beating on Frost...

I say he gets one Get Outa Jail Free Card for starting this.
