It's one thing if a lemming dives off the cliff solo, it's quite another if the lemming takes a non-lemming with it.

Also, to add to what Gaff mentioned: been in the position of equipment failure (and I'm strict when it comes to my gear), both my own & rental gear. It's a bad place to be, the ocean, when one's board is skittering towards the beach 1/4 mile away without its rider. Swimming takes on new definition at that point.

I've seen rips, just like everyone here has seen rips, that move as fast as mountain rivers. Really bad rips that materialize as if from nowhere. The worst I've seen were in France, but CR is wild as is Cali & the Atlantic is not to be trifled with. Ever.

And that's what you're doing: triflin'. With the biggest baddest mofo on the planet.

When you scope the break from the beach you have to assume the worst & ask yourself 'can I get back up here if it happens.' Doesn't even have to be a big day. People get into serious trouble within yards of dry land.

I learned to swim as a kid. The ol' parental lesson & then the old-timey incentive: swim to the dock out there at the swimming hole & get a dollar. So, a few years ago, I figured that there are probably some better ways to swim than what I do (and I'm decent in the water, no Mark Spitz.....keep your Phelps). Took several lessons at the local Y, of all places. I learned good stuff: better way to maximize push just on hand angle, conserving strength, better breathing aspects & just good stuff like that.

I think anyone who doesn't know how to swim, surfer or not, is taking chances with their own life & with other lives, too.
