I just found this on James Wieldand's wave predicting blog:

Updated: February 3, 2015 - First, For those who haven't heard, one of my friends went on a surf trip to dominican republic last week and has disappeared. His board was still in the rental, and some clothes. He was last seen either at a surf shop in Cabarete or at the beach bar called Eze last Wednesday evening. Please if you know anyone down there share this information so everyone can be on the lookout for him. There is a massive search going on right now. Although his board was found in the rental, nothing can be ruled out at this time. He could be on land or in the water. With this amount of time that has gone by let's hope the water.

I appreciate anything you can do to get the word out.

My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

I've heard good, and I have also heard this from a guy who used to run a B & B on the north east coast:

Don't go off the resort grounds. There is a bar nearby, it looks crowded and every one is having a good time and they are friendly. In reality, they are all getting paid to be there, and act like they are cool. A tourist goes in, they dose his drink, slip some cocaine into his pocket, get him arrested, throw him in the pit with the worst of the worst, then after a couple days, they give him a phone, he begs his family for $30K, they let him go.

That's a messed up situation if true, can't imagine that happening to me, but it can, anytime any place I'm sure.

Still not found. In the immortal words of Donald Rumsfield, "Who knows? There is that we know, there is that we don't know, and there is that we don't know we don't know."

I won't belabor this point, but I did go to Dominican Republic when I was 16 yrs old--had their military police strip search me and my pals, while I had an M-16 (or similar) jammed in the back of my neck. They let us go after about 20 minutes. I have never returned there. It is NOT Puerto Rico. Opinion: we should use the DR as a nuclear dumping ground or test site.

We are so thick with sharks down here that you can basically walk on their backs from Miami to Cuba and then on to the DR.

Sucks aboot the missing surfer dude. Hoping for the best outcome.

^^ pretty much explains where his generic hostility emanates from ^^

Tropical cattle prod in the bunghole would make a man, well, make a man into bitterburry.

I've been to DR a few times, including Cabarete. It always felt very tame to me, never a problem mixing it up with the local residents, but you know how it is in 3rd world-ish countries, things are great until they're not.

    Hope they find him.

In almost every post of yours, you bring up another posters "o-ring".
Is this why your wife dumped you?? Your un-natural fetish??
Not that there is anything wrong with it.......

That seems weird to hear, first surfer to go missing in years and someone saying don`t leave the resort grounds. I`ve been in Cabarete many times, never heard such a thing. People getting paid to act cool, lol. Cocaine can get you in trouble in any island, needless to say some people in islands can be mean to cocaine users if you mingle with the wrong people.
