I don't hate "kooks" or beginners, and never really understood the resentment. I think it's safe to assume that most of them are respectful people, and mean no harm, it's just that surfing is one of the few sports where the differences in skill levels are so obvious and apparent. I think some (not all) of the more experienced surfers use that to judge newbies, and it becomes nothing else other than a psychological tool meant to boost their own self esteem and convince themselves that they are in a higher position in surfing and in life.
I hate kooks but have no problems with beginners. Kooks refuse to follow ettiquette and deserve contempt. Beginners are just trying to learn.
