just wanted to post my experience this morning and see if anyone had similar. got up 6am drove 1/2 hour to beach expecting solid clean swell and found 3 ft close outs. drove around for an hour (all in monmouth county) and found it smaller and not so clean. figured it wasnt worth wasting a sick day so i went to work. Not at all what the forecast was calling for.
I was going to skip 2 classes today-- drove to assateague, saw DUMPING closeouts and turned around. It's a shame these bars can't hold up this swell without dumping. I'm hoping tomorrow's at least fun with a slightly smaller size.
Same thing happened to me yesterday. The size was there in some places but the direction of the swell was not good for most of Monmouth. Should have gone South.
I was in Monmouth County this morning, nov 3. I thought that there was size if you waited--some overhead waves. But, at the places I went, the bottom wasn't good. It went from deep water to shallow very abruptly, so it was dumping kind of hard. And the swell and wind direction weren't great either. I left after an hour and went back to work. (On a side note, yesterday at Rockaway NY was very good.)
umm...not at all my experience today...took the day off work, hit seaside & pretty much scored the best surf i've seen since the katia swell in early september. shoulder high-head high + on some sets. solid day & very glad i bailed on work!
I heard SeaSide was pretty big and nice. But Monmouth was disappointing for the second day in a row... Not to say there weren't some waves but a lotta closeouts
I had a great session as well. I checked a bunch of spots for like 45 mins in Monmouth County and paddled out around 10. It was super fun until about 11:30, lots of barrels right and left and very makeable if you could handle the drop. A few guys pulled into some solid overhead sets, but after the tide filled in more and the wind picked up it got junky. Good session for me though, I'm glad I called off.
It's just a really tough swell angle for most spots in moco. Not like a south medium period swell where every jetty is reeling. I'd say about 90 percent of breaks were 90 percent closeouts. Very very few breaks were really good. I'm happy to say I found one. It kind of underscores the importance of knowing your local breaks and which breaks work on what kind of swell.

I had to work 7a-4p and was hoping to have clean waves when I came home like the forecast...nothing but deep nonsense on the north and south side with a bumpy 1st st with around 40 people on it...I stayed in a drank a few beers instead
i surfed monmouth county today, paddled out around 830 at a jetty in deal. Didnt look too good from checking it but i decided to go out anyways. The place where i paddled i have scored there with east swells when everywhere is was closing out. I paddle to the middle where there were A-frames coming in. It had a normal consitency of about head high waves. Then i noticed 1 person at the jetty taking the lefts. I took paddled over hoping to find only lefts since i was goofy, It ended up being really really good. It was head high, heavy, hollow, some sets even hit overhead. The drop in was really hard to make if you were on the peak, if you were dropping in on the shoulder it was much easier. All you had to do was bottom turn and set up and you were going to get barreled. The only problem was the current pulling me out to sea, it was so bad that i was consitently paddling back in. I surfed until 1230. It was an amazing day for me did not feel like i was wasting my time at all, best surf session ive had for a while.
Chincoteague was disorganized closeouts at dawn. The winds were 0. Tide was still low. The swell was there, but being wasted. So i went to work haha.
don't know what you guys are talkingabout. moco from 3-dark last night (wed) some bombs were coming through -headhigh to 1 ft oh on set. can't see that swell faded to waist high overnight
To bad the time change didn't happen yet, you coulda dawn patrolled it. I made it out a half hour before sunrise, shared a right hander with 2 guys for about an hour before it got crowded. Made it back to work by 10. Never seen so many guys get slotted in one single session in vb. My buddy saw one guy get a legit 3-4 second shack. Surfline wins the forecast battle against swellinfo this time...it was definately more 5' to 7' (surfline) than 3' to 4' (swellinfo). Keep downplaying the forecast tho Swellinfo, keeps the crowds a bit smaller.
