I'd like to get out of Rhode Island for a few days over Christmas timeframe, and do some surfing. The spot to go will likely be dictated by what the surf forecast looks like over the 2-3 days I have, but I'm wondering what you's all's thoughts are on one of these three destinations. I'd like to keep the drive down to 4-5 hours or less. I surfed Cape Cod last week and really enjoyed it; plenty of surf and solitude. I've never been to Long Island or Maine in my life, so these would be spots that I'm unlikely to ever surf again.

Montauk looks to have some hotels right on the beach, which is helpful. Alan Weisbecker raved about Long Island, so I'm wondering if that might be the call. Looks to be 4.5 hours with the ferry.

Not looking for anyone to blow up their local spot, but I welcome your thoughts.

    Heh.

Well, I grew up surfing Jersey, mostly south of LBI but I've been up to Seaside a handful of times.

I don't know that I want to take a surf trip to New Jersey. Jesus did I actually just say those words?

For a couple o years I spent Thanksgiving in Montauk with the ex.. Always scored decent surf. There are some places to stay, but I would just park the van at Camp Hero and wake up to a view of Turtle Cove.
If you've never been, I would recommend. Nice country feeling, still fairly warm, and a decent variety of surf spots.

For a short window in December I'd just go where the forecast dictates. It's East Coast, so, there's no telling. Could be flat, a nor'easter, who knows. I wouldn't make the call until you start you car engine, and check the latest swell forecast with your car in idle.

Maine AND NH suck. And besides, we hate you. Not personally you, but tourist you.
You are NOT welcome in NH and/or Maine.
Especially if you have New Jersey plates. You have a target on you.......

Living on long Island, I've never been to Montauk. But i can say that there have been some spots by me (central LI) that have been pretty good lately.

I always wanted to try Maine. Never been though.

I like taking little 2-3 day getaways on the east coast to surf. Been to a few places up and down the coast. And will be doing more. My advice....go somewhere you never been. It's just more fun that way. Although i never been to Montauk, i have been out east and is really nice out there with lots to do. I'd wait for a forecast then choose between Montauk or Maine. If you do head to LI, shoot me a PM. Cant help much with surf spots out east but can point you towards a good time.

id say Montauk, but only if ur a good surfer.if ur like an intermediate don't go.

and whats wrong with a surf trip to jersey?kelly slater did it,andy irons did it,everyone from florida and the obx did it,wardo did it,etc lol.

jersey is great.plain and simple.sure u can go to the obx, surf waves 2ft bigger with 40 people at every break or u and a pal can pick any peak u want at any beach u want(winter).

lbi is good in the fall and summer, because everywhere else is dead flat and they always have sandbars, only been there twice in the winter.but u cant compare an lbi barrel to a nomoco barrel lol.

point about Montauk tho is its a small crew of damn near pro surfers.thats why I was saying don't go if ur not 100% no need to get in their way and leave a bad name for yourself in ny.anywhere else in ny tho surf ur brains out whether ur a kook or slater.

it gets heavy in the wintertime,u can have like a 8 minute paddle out on a sizeable day, might not sound bad but that's 8 minutes of taking waves on the head ,getting pushed back in,etc..if in doubt,go to maine

Some stay behind, not all leave. Humans leave so nobody is there to see them.
Females go south to release pups in warmer waters; gives them better survival probabilities.
Males hang around, but do go deeper, returning to feed on seals which stick around all year. As long as the males can consume enough calories to fight off cold water temps, they stay. They have been spotted up in Maine waters deep into winter (jan/feb/march).
    Yup. No sh1t.

I deleted my post by accident. Anyway, I was saying the montauk has relatively mushy waves with long rides similiar to point judith. More longboard type waves and it's laughable to say only pro surfers. They have surf camp. Maine has similiar waves to maine.

They track them year round. All the pings dissapear. Then they reappear in june. Or is this incorrect? I could swear I read that.

No, that's largely correct. Same as out in CA where the sharks go off shore 1/2 to HI in the winter.

MTK is fun in the winter, handles that pesky west wind pretty good but any east and its a mess. Watch out for rocks in the water at some of the cove breaks. Plenty of people surf there not just "pros" lol. It can handle pretty sizable surf so if we score a big swell thats a good place to be. Been out there a few times from waist high mush to over head turtles... its a fun wave and great scenery.

Pings depend on fish surfacing. Please note--I did say they seek deeper waters. And, importantly, not all sharks are tagged.

AND the whites I've seen tagged are womens...which he you said head south to warm beaches to sun themselves in the winter

Correct for the most part. There are some males tagged as well. They tag them as they catch them; it is NOT a scientific study, unless one wants to call it an "observational study" which has only weak scientific value. 99% of "global warming" studies are "observational", thus, the debate..........

If you think MTK only has mushy, LB waves you haven't traveled around enough.
