They're pretty bad this year in SENC. Last ESA comp of the year this past Saturday at CB--I don't think anyone but the SUP's got out from a heat without getting stung on the neck and/or face. Hell, I got some stuck in my hair after duck diving straight through one--felt like my freaking scalp was on fire. ..and let's not even talk about what happens when you hit one while riding a wave... Sure, they're not nearly as bad as Nettles but they really suck in the numbers we are seeing this year. Anyone else seeing tons of them?
i have only seen a few here this year. but this past summer needles and wasps destroyed me. no man o wars so that was nice.
Saturday and Sunday I saw loads of them. I got stuck on the eye lid while duck diving. I don't remember them being this bad last year.
Yeah man, I still have scars from getting nailed in August. I am glad I only got hit on the legs and stomach.
Saturday at the Pipe was crazy. There was at least 35-50 washed up on shore. Crazy lil boogers. Couple of people complained of being stung. Thank god it's wetsuit time. Other than that though, pretty fun lil weekend of surf.
same, i got a nasty scar going up the side of my leg, i remember when i was like 10 though and my step-bro got nailed by a mano. he has never gone in the ocean since.
I don't think you are refering to moon jellies. Moon jellies stingers are too small and soft to pierce human skin, atleast besides the EXTREMELY rare occurrence. I used to surf at night with thousands of them glowing all around me, purposely moving my bodyparts through them, and not once was I ever stung.
Partially correct, Sly. Their nematocysts are really short and can't penetrate anything other than the softest skin on an adult's body--dirty pretty parts (good thing we're in wetsuits) and your face, scalp and neck. They can sting a child all over and will really eff your eyes up. Fun Fact: Cannon Ball jellyfish don't have stinging tentacles but they do secrete an irritant if you mess with them that can burn your face and eyes... learned that one in jellyfish fights when I was a grom.
They def sting. This dude about a month ago duck dived and came up under a bunch of the. Shoulda seen his face and eyelids and neck. Major welts and pain. Cold clear water will cause the tiny pieces in your skin to release more toxin. Use vinegar. There is an anti sting lotion thats called SafeSea Jellyfish sting protective Lotion. I used it: my buddies all got stings, I didn't. So maybe it works. It creates a chemical barrier. Can get it online.
The SafeSea lotion works good but it is thick, gooey and expensive. I use it when the sea lice are bad. I got stung in the eye by a moon jelly Sunday duckdiving. They were really bad a week or so ago, but the sting wears off in about 5 minutes or so. We used to throw them at each other when we were groms. Just scoop one up and throw it on your bros back as he scans the horizon for the next set. Splat/Yow!
