Why doesn't SI show moon phases considering it has such an effect on the tides, I think this should be something that they add onto this site...thoughts?
Or you could always Google it or walk outside. Not a bad idea though. Btw im about to get a celestial navigation test grade back I hope I did well.
Maybe SI should go full-on astrology seeing how their surf forecasts have been aboot as reliable as a horoscope lately.
I just go by the time of high tide. Around me... If the tide is high around 8am/pm, you know the moon is either full or new, so you can expect a higher high and lower low... a relatively large tidal variation, and a greater affect on surf conditions. If it's high at around 2am/pm, you know it's in a quarter phase, so you can expect a smaller tidal variation, and a lower affect on wave conditions. You can interpolate from those two points.

In addition to what crew says, the SI provided swell table gives the water depth at the tides, so you have an idea how high the high is, and how low the low is. These end points can be used to interpolate. Be sure use a sinusoid for best interpolation estimates. That is all. Carry on.
Yup... it's totally dependent upon your local spot. Even going up and down the coast of NJ changes it. You gotta know what the pattern is for your spot to be useful.
